Rumor: Apple event Sept. 5

Infinite Loop (IL) is reporting that their sources "inside" Apple have leaked September 5th as the date of a future press event. Supposedly on the bill: New iPods! Some will run Mac OS X and some will be full-screen. When pressed, IL's source said that AppleInsider's latest report "...seems about right."

Of course, this is all speculation, so keep that in mind.

I really doubt that they'll be releasing a touchscreen iPod this soon after the iPhone release. They've got to give consumers at least some motivation to shell out the $500 for the iPhone. We'll see, though.

if all the major retailers are out of stock and ipods 11 days seems like a very long time for them wait. the 5th seems like the right date. last time they updated the ipod they also had a similar sale however then it said you couldnt get the new ipod, only the old one

New iPods are coming, you can bank on it. Everywhere full sized iPods are no longer in stock...think about it- half of Apple's profits come from iPods- you think they'd let stock just run out if nothing was coming next?

Nano's are still available, which leads me to believe the current Nano will be rev'ed but not changed significantly. That stubby Nano is gonna replace the 5.5G iPod, except with flash memory (as per the rumors.) But there will also be a top-a-da-line iPod Touch running OS X (the phoneless iPhone), which will basically kill whatever little bit o life was left in the Zune (and any other HD players.)

The only questions are- 1) How much for the Touch? (hopefully starting at $299, but with the new flash iPod there is room for Apple to bump up to $349 or $399, and 2) Could it possibly get Wifi and all the associated goodies? (Safari, YouTube, etc.) I'm guessing not, but maybe the most expensive model could?

"The timing (September) is right for iPods, though I still think there's a chance we won't see any new ones until after Christmas so the iPhone can have the holiday season all to itself."

This is a common sentiment that I just don't get. Why do people think that a 600 dollar, small capacity flash smartphone will have its sales eroded by a 350 dollar high capacity media player? iPhones and iPods are very different markets (and price points). Shuffles don't erode Nano sales and Nano's don't erode iPod sales. Does Volvo refuse to update the styling of their S60 and S40's when they introduce a new S80? Of course not. Brand continuity across a wide variety of price points is infinitely more valuable to a company than just releasing one super expensive (and limited) product and resting on your laurels while the competition runs loops around the other 80% of your lesser priced products.

"On the other hand, I don't think either would merit a special event. What are they going to say about a new iPod? "It's just like an iPhone... except without the Internet or a phone." Doesn't sound too good"

That of course would be a part of what Steve Jobs DOESN'T say. He is a master of glossing over deficiencies (and even making these deficiencies seem like features with his slick presentation skills.) But seriously, a radical re-envisioning of the iPod (touchscreen running on OSX) doesn't warrant a little pomp and circumstance? Its certainly a lot bigger deal than a 5.5G iPod with a 30% brighter screen and some games. I'd say its al lot bigger deal than the last 2 generations of iPods which were merely evolutionary tweaks of the original design.

Beyond the iPod speculation, may Apple introduce to us, . . . the band we've known for all these years, . . . Sgt. Pep . . . er, . . . The Beatles?

What I mean to say is that if they double-up the new iPod announcements with iTunes launch of Beatles For Sale, then that would be worthy of a special announcement. Apple records available through Apple. Of course I'm merely speculating here, I have no evidence that this is part of the event, but I wouldn't be surprised, given the recent additions of the McCartney and Lennon solo material and other news items on this issue.

Wouldn't be surprised, but since my 5G 30 gig is in pristine condition I'm going to wait this update out.

This might just be a coincidence, but I work at a popular wholesale chain here in Canada and we're currently sold out of all but 80gb ipods and shuffles, and even those are very low in stock. What makes it more interesting is that none of the ipods have been marked for further orders. Seems a little strange to let your stock of ipods run out, not even bothering to order any more during the back to school buying spree?

Who is even saying that it will be released the same day it is announced. Maybe they're filing for the FCC and want to let the cat out of the bag before FCC does. They probably won't be for sale until after the student discount is over.

i'm a bit skeptical since the education free nano/ipod doesn't end until 9/16.

yea but last year the ipod nanos were upgraded as well as the core duo to core 2 duo computers during the sale too so that really doesnt mean ne thing.
