System Preference changes, new Preview toolbar in latest Leopard build
The latest Leopard build has dropped, and screenshots, legal or otherwise, are making their way out into the world. Over the weekend, we posted what looks like the opening movie, and here's a shot of Leopard's System Preferences screen. There are a few changes in there-- the Dashboard and Exposé panel is now called "Exposé and Spaces," and quite a few of the icons, including the Dock, Displays, and Sharing icons. And as reader Dave told us, the Command key on the Keyboard and Mouse icon no longer has the Open Apple. Sad.Apparently there's also a new toolbar for Preview.app as well, but I haven't yet seen a screenshot of that one yet. October is just over a month away!

"October is just over a month away!"
Unfortunately October 31 is just over two months away. And when Apple announces a month for release, they invariably mean the very end of that month.

Not the right place, but we just ordered (they should arrive next week) a MBP and a new iMac for our office. Any chance we might could get 10.5 for discount/free when it is released?

h8rain: Not likely. It's possible that if Apple announces a specific ship date for Leopard, that they might give Mac buyers from that point forward a break on 10.5, which I think they've done in the past. (I say "if" Apple announces a ship date, because they could just begin shipping without any advance notice, at some point in the next 2 months.)
As someone who is waiting for Leopard before buying a new iMac (because I really don't see getting fleeced for $129 shortly after), I wonder what kind of dam will break when Leopard ships, or when they announce some kind of deal like this? I'll bet there are tons of people like me, waiting to place their orders.

Here's a Leopard question: the preview shows a slideshow button. Any chance that they've FINALLY fixed the built-in Slideshow to display the files in order, instead of randomly? It would make that feature, introduced in Tiger I think, MUCH more useful.

Scott: Yea the boss wants a new laptop now, and gave the go ahead to get the new 24" iMac, so I paced the order, completely forgetting that a new OS is just around the corner. Personally I think the new iMac was originally in line to have 10.5, so they should give the iMac purchases it for free. But of course I am cheap :).
I would cancel the order and wait, but we kinda need the computers now. If they don't offer the free/discount path, I will still buy it for basically the "Spaces" feature alone, and full Boot Camp support.

So if I wanted Leopard the very second it came out, what's my best bet? Just go to an Apple Store? I'm in NYC so I would hope that Soho and the 5th Avenue Store would be among the first to have it in stock. I wonder if 5th Ave. would release it at midnight or something because they're open 24/7.
I got an e-mail months ago from Amazon asking if I wanted to pre-order. Somehow I think that would take longer. What are all you fellow impatient people going to do?

The control key has never had the open apple. That's command. Silly tuaw.

"…the Control key on the Keyboard and Mouse icon…"
That'd be "command key".

The "Exposé and Spaces" option has been named as such since the WWDC build, if I'm not mistaken.

@PSM
They'll have a midnight launch party.
When Tiger was released, the Apple store on Michigan Ave. in Chicago had one, so I'm sure that they'll have one this time as well.

"the Command key on the Keyboard and Mouse icon no longer has the Open Apple. Sad."
I'm all for adding "command". It makes it a lot easier to help my mother over the phone. But why get rid of the apple? There's plenty of room for it in the upper left corner of the key.
The biggest keyboard goof is leaving the cursor and numeric keys off the wireless keyboard. I use an external wireless keyboard with my PowerBook specifically because it has those extra keys. So hopefully by the time Apple makes a new-style wireless extended keyboard, it'll have the Apple back.

To SSteve: I am disappointed as well about the wireless not having a number pad. At least give people a choice, such as for $80 you get the small one and for $90 you get the regular keyboard, just no wires, like the previous model.
