Apple announces new iPod Nanos

The swirling rumors of new iPod nanos have turned out to be true, and they look just like all those leaked photos pictured which is to say... stubby. The new body makes room for a 2 inch color display with the highest pixel density that Apple has ever shipped. The nano uses that screen to sport an overhauled UI for the iPod which includes CoverFlow and 3 bundled games.
Apple claims you'll get 24 hours of audio playback or 5 hours of video. The iPod nano comes in two capacities: 4 gigs for $149 which will be available in silver and the 8 gig for $199 which will come in a number of colors.

Screens only 2" diagonally... so the Nano is still pretty small. I think I like it, plus $199 for the 8gb is pretty fair.
However, still not enough storage for me haha.

The tech specs say it requires iTunes 7.4.

Those new colors are god awful and I liked the iPod better in plastic -at least aesthetically. The fat nano makes more sense when you see it in a line next to the Classic but the whole thing looks like a not so subtle upsell to the touch screen models. To my eyes the touch looks even better than the iphone. Wish it had more storage.
Oh, and I'm on my way to buy an iPhone.

I do have to wonder will these new versions still work with the Nike running kit?

I'm so glad I got the last gen nano- which has become my favorite iPod so far, even if it's only 4gb.

Fat, boring colours. Too bad, Apple, you made a mistake.

With the dollar being so low, I might order one and have it shipped to Europa.

When I saw the earlier leaked photos and some mockups I thought it was hideous. Looking at these today I'm not so sure. I kind of like it. It's cute.
And the colors, well they are kind of odd but maybe they just want to attract those 17 people that bought brown Zunes back with some odd colors. Give it a few months and I bet there will be new colors. Maybe.
Wish my wife's birthday hadn't just happened and I probably would have got her one of these instead of the 30gb video i did get her. Oh well.
I like that Apple keeps mixing it up, so while these may be a bit odd in the color dept I do like the form factor and I'm sure they are going to sell just fine.

One small thing about these new Nanos: there is currently a promotion for students (buy a Mac and get a Nano free). But as of this afternoon, you cannot get a new Nano, you have to buy an old Nano. And instead of getting $199, you get $149. Question is: how do you buy an old Nano? And would you want to?

@UpTown -- I concur: anyone know how to add one of the old 2G nano iPods to the cart?
Sort of luckily, I've been eying this student deal for a month or so, and I had a silver 4G already in my cart. It's still there (at the lowered price), but I'd rather swap it out for a different color.

Cranberry red is nice, but the 2G nano colors were much better.

I have a question...are these nanos (or the 2G's even) still compatible with my older peripherals? I have a car adapter that I still use my 3G iPod "Classic" with.
