See the new iPod Nano in action

The newly refreshed iPod nanos no only sport a new look, but a new version of the iPod UI (as does the iPod Classic). This might not be obvious a first blush, so Apple has posted some demo movies to clue you in. The first shows off CoverFlow and the second is focused on the 'Extra' functionality in the iPod nano.

What do you think of the new look of the UI?

1. NANO- I have a 2nd gen nano and i love it but the 3rd gen is very tempting! i would like "FATTY" so much more if the colors were fun like the 2nd gen. that and the lack of memory are the only turnoffs!

2. TOUCH- the ipod touch on the other hand is a great idea, but it seems like it is the iphone's scraps!! it looks so close to the iphone, that its a putoff!!!!

3. CLASSIC new look. but same old deal... its stuck in the middle and the nano has given it major competition.... the only benifit of it is the memory! if you feel bad taking your once beloved songs and moving them back into itunes storage.... well then i guess this is the one for you!

all in all i would choose the nano in about 3-4 mths they may have out new colors because of ratings, and the prices may go down after the holidays!

Why aren't there any to scale pictures of these new iPods?
Are there any I haven't found?

The Nano is so illogical in my eyes. I mean, on one hand you now have 160 BEAUTIFUL gigabytes of room, and over here, for half the price, you only get 8. It's a -little- cheaper, barely smaller, and has less features. Personally I just can't see this as a viable option. The "cheap" iPod is the shuffle. The "big" iPod is the classic, and the "cool" iPod is the iTouch...so what is the Nano's place?

But hey, they sell a whole lot, so who am I to say anything.

@1- How do you 'know' the 5G should be able to support Coverflow? It's quite possible that Apple changed/upgraded the hardware in the new iPods to allow the new UI features.

@8- The new iPods have 2GB of RAM and dual-core CPU's. That's why Coverflow works better on them, than on your MBP. ;-)

Too bad I just got an iPod! Those new ones look very cool, and, if not for the fact that I am already on ATT, and thus, a future iPhone buyer, I would have a tough choice between the 160 Gig "Classic" and the 16 Gig "Touch."

The silver lining in all this was that they gave me a rebate for all but $50 on the 'pod when I bought my MacBook Pro. And it's still new enough to me that I have not yet fully tapped its potential.

Either way, it's nice to have compelling choices, rather than repelling ones.

I think Apple is making a very strong case that people may need more than one iPod in their lives, depending on what they want to do. If you're exercising, there's the shufffle--maximum portability, minimum customizability. If you want more control in listening to music, audiobooks, or podcasts and want it small & portable, the 8GB of space on the Nano should be sufficient. You can even throw in a small handful of videos if you really want to watch them on that tiny screen (a feature they could've left out). If you want to carry around your ENTIRE music collection with you and you have a big one, get a Classic. If you want a Wifi computer you can take anywhere for surfing and browsing the iTunes store, plus a great screen for watching videos, a music player, and the most futuristic and amazing interface anywhere, get an iPod Touch. And if you want a phone, too--you get the idea.

i have an 'ancient' nano and i'm still happy with it, since i want to
listen to my music. i'm not quite sure about the new nano's design,
until i see it in RL. i'm talking about the rounded sides, not quite
sure, if the more and more organic becomic look is really what i want
and if it contributes to a more minimalistic design as steve claims,
arguing, that they did it, to get rid of the plastic party at the
bottom and the top.the iPod touch, i don't know. it sure is nice to
have a touch display, but like i said, i want to listen to my music,
not look at it. okay, it's a video player too, but then it should
have a little more storage capacity than 8 or 16GB, shouldn't it?
besides that, this capacity values look kinda small, compared to 80
and 160GB...
