See the new iPod Nano in action

The newly refreshed iPod nanos no only sport a new look, but a new version of the iPod UI (as does the iPod Classic). This might not be obvious a first blush, so Apple has posted some demo movies to clue you in. The first shows off CoverFlow and the second is focused on the 'Extra' functionality in the iPod nano.
What do you think of the new look of the UI?

Why can't Apple allow owners of 5th Generation iPod videos to enjoy the new UI via Software Update? I know the older iPods are capable of supporting it. Seems like a mean marketing ploy to me.

I think it's because of their accounting theories. For example, when they added search to the 5.5G iPods, the 5G "couldn't" get that feature for accounting reasons.

What's with all this talk of choppiness in the Cover Flow UI that Engadget is talking about? Looks pretty smooth to me.

Now MY work begins - which iPod to buy? I have an 'ancient' mini and have been waiting. Now is the time, but I didn't anticipate this much selection. Decisions, decisions.
I'm inclined to go with the nano, but the wifi on the touch keeps beckoning me. The phone is great, but I'm not willing to change carriers, even for this Apple smart, smart phone.
I'll be watching the reviews and comments to see if something jumps out at me to justify one model over another.

Just ordered mine--in Red. I love the idea of the iPod Touch and wifi built in, but I'm replacing an iPod mini and I want something portable and almost entirely for audio. When the day comes that I need a decent video player and wifi device, I'll have no problem buying an iPod Touch.
AND if Apple drops the price of the new Nano by 1/3 in two months, I won't care at all. I know what I'm doing buying it the day it's announced. (No, there aren't any rumors of that, I'm just reacting to the iPhone owners who feel "insulted".)

Can anyone offer a practical explanation as to how they get coverflow working so well on this little guy (and all the iPods and iPhones for that matter), seeing as on my MacBook Pro with 1 GB ram, cover flow on iTunes gobbles up 200 MB of memory and eventually slows my system down to a crawl? I know the images are smaller sized, but I'm being serious. I like cover flow a lot and would use it more if it wasn't such a performance hit.

By the way, did anyone notice that Product (RED) looks like Product (lipstick colored magenta)?

Did I see somewhere that this was going to be referred to as the "iPod Fatty?"

Mark, I could be way wrong, but I'm guessing some kind of Core Animation technology went into that...supposidly Coverflow won't need that much memory when leopard ships cause Core Animation will do a lot of the work

coverflow is nice... if you have album covers in your audio files. If you don't (which is the case for me), then it's like an empty flash animation template...

We got lots of choice with the new ipods, but its such a hard choice.
I cant just go for the touch and know that im getting the best one. The touch doesnt have the games that the normal ipods do, its large, and kind of fragile looking. oh, and expensive.
I could get the nano which i think looks great now. it does everything that the full size ipod did, but smaller, cheaper and has a cool new ui. Much better in my pocket than the touch.
So, Im very unsure. The touch is very very cool, and would be great as a little internet/video tablet, but not as good for music as the nano or even the shuffle. And I have purchased a few ipod games that I just cant play on the touch.
Now listen up Apple if you read thsi!
This is what I think one of the main selling points for the touch should be (not stupid youtube!)
The airport express and AppleTV could be a great system paired with the touch in a Sonos type way. The touch is wireless so why can I select music from my whole itunes library when at home, and then select which output device I want it to come out of. Perhaps I just want to listen to an album thats on my mac on the headphones, or perhaps I want it to come out of the Appletv in the living room, and teh airport in the kitchen. Now that would be cool and drive more sales.
Then I would buy an ipod nano for on the move and a touch for round the house.

i have an 'ancient' nano and i'm still happy with it, since i want to listen to my music. i'm not quite sure about the new nano's design, until i see it in RL. i'm talking about the rounded sides, not quite sure, if the more and more organic becomic look is really what i want and if it contributes to a more minimalistic design as steve claims, arguing, that they did it, to get rid of the plastic party at the bottom and the top.
the iPod touch, i don't know. it sure is nice to have a touch display, but like i said, i want to listen to my music, not look at it. okay, it's a video player too, but then it should have a little more storage capacity than 8 or 16GB, shouldn't it? besides that, this capacity values look kinda small, compared to 80 and 160GB...

I think Apple is making a very strong case that people may need more than one iPod in their lives, depending on what they want to do. If you're exercising, there's the shufffle--maximum portability, minimum customizability. If you want more control in listening to music, audiobooks, or podcasts and want it small & portable, the 8GB of space on the Nano should be sufficient. You can even throw in a small handful of videos if you really want to watch them on that tiny screen (a feature they could've left out). If you want to carry around your ENTIRE music collection with you and you have a big one, get a Classic. If you want a Wifi computer you can take anywhere for surfing and browsing the iTunes store, plus a great screen for watching videos, a music player, and the most futuristic and amazing interface anywhere, get an iPod Touch. And if you want a phone, too--you get the idea.

Too bad I just got an iPod! Those new ones look very cool, and, if not for the fact that I am already on ATT, and thus, a future iPhone buyer, I would have a tough choice between the 160 Gig "Classic" and the 16 Gig "Touch."
The silver lining in all this was that they gave me a rebate for all but $50 on the 'pod when I bought my MacBook Pro. And it's still new enough to me that I have not yet fully tapped its potential.
Either way, it's nice to have compelling choices, rather than repelling ones.

@1- How do you 'know' the 5G should be able to support Coverflow? It's quite possible that Apple changed/upgraded the hardware in the new iPods to allow the new UI features.
@8- The new iPods have 2GB of RAM and dual-core CPU's. That's why Coverflow works better on them, than on your MBP. ;-)
