TV out locked in new iPod classic and nano

This is rather disappointing. According to iLounge, Apple has re-designed the TV out functionality of the new iPod classics and nanos so that they no longer work with older third-party TV out cables and docks. Apparently, the new classics and nanos require an Apple authentication chip in the dock/cable to unlock the TV out setting and these chips are only available to official third-party suppliers. At this point only official Apple products and a few select third-party offerings will unlock the TV out setting. The AV cables for the new iPods will reportedly sell for $49 when released.

I bought the new ipod nano and have just bought a dock to output video to my tv (ONKYO DS-A2). I couldn't work out why it wasn't working - now I know. What a waste of time and money.

This is total BS. I am a dentist and purchased the ipod to allow my patient to watch movies during treatment. I have already purchase the optical lens (which works with every other mp3 player), and spend hundreds of dollars at the I tunes store fpr videos, and i can't even use the F@#$ing thing. Thanks for nothing.

well I don't think the chip contains the video equipment cuz I can still get mine to play video it just doesn't work properly. Okay and isn't i-home an official apple accessory producer. So shouldn't it still work. This such a bad move by apple cuz every step they take towards exclusivity pushes more people away.

Hi, I just bought a new 5.5g 80gb Ipod i think its called and I cannot hook it up to my car to play video through the monitors.

I have done research which shows that you have disabled the TV out functionallity when not using Genuine Ipod technology.

In all honesty, I couldnt give 2 f%&ks about paying an extra $50 to get a cable but as if I want to have a docking station in my car and then have to put the Ipod on it and then find somewhere to sit it so it doesnt fall over damaging the Hard Drive. WTF, Seriously.

ALL I WANT IS A CABLE TO GO STRAIGHT FROM THE IPOD TO MY CAR STEREO.

A standard 3.5mic to L/R Audio and 1x Video.

Like the old one, I wish it worked but since I just bought it to play in my car it is somewhat of a disappointment really.

What can you do about this? Anything? Do you even care about consumers? One day, things will happen and you will wish you gave a sh!t about the customer and the product.

This just confirms what I have been saying about Apple for the last 10 years. I thought I would kive you a go and get with the program but obviously I should stick to following my instinct and stay away from POS W@NK FACTOR PRODUCTS LIKE YOUR PRODUCT< FFS

Have a read of this, this is where your PR is at right now, terribly unfortunate!

My advise, With all your money, with all your knowledge, do something that is for the people, where is all the customer focus, when someone calls tech support and asks why they cannot use their new Ipod on the TV and they get told, "Tough luck buddy, thats the way it is from now on". WHAT . THE . F%&k . IS . THAT????

All in all, I will never buy any other MAC POS again and I will continue to tell all my mates and colleagues exactly what I have been saying for the past 10 years.

U $UCK C0C|<

Thanks for listening :)

So apple wants the T.V. networks to work with them to put content on Itunes, but Apple can't even work with it's 3rd party vendors to ensure their devices work properly.

This is B.S.!!!!!

The new chips in the cables are not for copy protection, their NOT for high definition either. iPods Classics chug displaying album art - what makes you think their fast enough for HD?

It's obvious what it is for and everyone keeps running for other answers. Apple wants control of their product line, and will only allow "OFFICIALLY LICENSED" products to run on their new hardware. This is not new - its a CONTROL move and nothing more. They need to secure their market and guarantee income from third parties thus insuring profitability. Apple charging psychotic amounts of money for their $2 cables will only hurt sales in the end. And yes these cables cost retailers generally between $1.25 - $2.

Its totally funny but with profit margins like these, Apple is only strengthening the market for third party products - AND hacking!

I can see only one reason for Apple to do this: HDCP...

They are getting ready to launch some HD support and need to have HDCP in there for content producers to play ball.

Selling more cables seems a lame reason, and I would be surprised that it turns out it is just that.

Best regards,

I had actually thought about getting a new Classic and the Philips portable DVD/iPod player with 8" screen. I figured then I'd get lots of storage, and have a good screen when I want to watch movies. Oh well, I guess not.
