Random album flash in iPod Classic

While a lot has been said about the iPod Touch, not much has been said about the new old standard, the iPod Classic. Kirk McElhearn has written a pretty scathing review of a feature that I didn't even notice-- that album artwork on the side while you're browsing music. Apparently it's not related to what you're listening to at all (which is what I originally suspected it was): it's completely random.

Why would this be the case? I thought it was a cool feature to put what you're listening to on the side, so even while you browse through the music, you could have a static reminder of what's playing. But no. Kirk says it's flashy and moving and random-- just like (gasp) a Flash ad. Apparently you can turn it off, and have just a static graphic sit there. But that doesn't explain why anyone thought it was a good idea in the first place.

To be completely fair to Apple, I haven't actually used the iPod Classic myself yet-- maybe there's some useful function that can come out of showing random, moving art (suggestions for what to listen to next, maybe?). But flash for flash's sake like this seems a weird decision on Apple's part, especially in a device that's supposed to be a Classic iPod.

Hey asshat, use a product before making an uneducated blog post about it.

You should do a major edit on this post because it's largely inaccurate.

Here's what someone who glanced at the classic's menu would know.

That album art isn't there when you're browsing music - it's on the main menu and deeper into preferences, and it's contextual. You do not see this when browsing music.

It's also slow panning, and fades in and out to other covers - not at all "flashy"

You can hover over now playing, and it'll show what's playing! Or you can navigate to the now playing screen! gasp!

Good job at explaining a feature you knew absolutely nothing about based on some whiny douche that can't stand random album artwork on the main menu - it must be so hard to him to navigate to music>albums or any other menu because of this feature. He'll probably end up reverting back to the 5g so he can look at himself in its glossy-fronted finish and daydream about how awesome he is.

and you call yourself a blogger...

On the 3rd-Gen Nano, if you highlight Now Playing the root menu, you will see artwork for the currently-playing track on the right. On the Classic, you will see a musical note icon and the name of the track. The interface for both Nano and Classic are supposed to be identical, so I believe this is a bug and the Classic should be displaying artwork. I've reported this to Apple. Go do this yourself at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html.

The random artwork when highlighting Music in the root menu is a great idea. It makes you appreciate the beauty of this art form. It can also remind you of music that you haven't played in a while, which is also what I believe to be a major purpose of Cover Flow.

I happen to love the random art work and think you guys need to come up with something more to worry about. I love it because it reminds me of music that I have not listened to in a long time. I am loving my new classic. It is the first pod that has been able to hold ALL of my music (with only 4gb to spare). I have listened to more music this past week that I totally forgot that I had simply because I saw the album art pop up. On that not a "listen to that album button" would be pretty cool but heh - it is kind of like playing album art trivia - it is fun to try and remember what that album is.

I love it personally.

Wow, that is lame. I hate to say that about any Apple product. Cover flow was not working on my friends classic, just thought I'd add that.

Yes, please use the device before you review. Makes sense.

Also, as its been said before, the image to the right is contextual to the menu system.

Now Playing - Shows you the album art playing. ( Just in case your forgot what you are listening to.

Music - shows you your albums in a random slideshow form.

Videos - displays your video album art in a random slideshow form.

Photos - displays your photos in a random slideshow form.

Podcasts - displays your podcasts' album artwork in a random slideshow form.

As you drill down deeper in the Extras menu and settings etc... previews of what you will be selecting appear.

Its a visual way to compliment a text menu.

It was made like this by design. At least read up on a device or go to your Apple Store / Best Buy ( who sponsors the site! ) and use the device. Get familiar with it. Then try writing a review.

But don't go off of what I heard a friend of a friend say.

I own an iPod Classic. I have no complaints with it other than a sometimes laggy response from the wheel others have mentioned.

CoverFlow is a gimmick you'll use maybe a couple of times before ignoring it. I guess I'm strange in that I turn on the music I want to listen to then put the iPod in my pocket.

If you don't believe me, try this --

#6 here.

I did have a 5G iPod, and it was just fine. Much faster than the 6G, AV cable works, dock connector works, no split-screen stupidity in menus, etc etc.

eh, I'm not so keen on this feature. Now I don't hate it; I'd just prefer to 'turn it off'. I personally perfer the 'plain menus' but this looks nice. My main problem was that it seems to make the iPod really slow. At least when I was messing with one in an Apple store. I'm gonna go back soon and test to see if I have a better expierence. And I wish something like the clock in the extras menu would show the actual time-that'd be useful. Or if I could use my own photos in stead of album art-I'd LOVE that. I think Apple just need to add a pref. setting- something they should also do in OS X.

You guys sound like jerks. There is no reason why one would think that album art floating in the background was anything other than the art for what you were listening to. Anything else wouldnt be logical, possible but not logical. Why if listening to nelly furtado, do I want to see a picture of AKON, doesnt make sense logically. and you posers who use these blogs to talk shit should be ashamed of yourselves. nut up, chumps and quit being such douches!!!!
