iPod touch dark screen problems

There are increasing reports out there about problems with the screens on the new iPod touch. Apparently many folks (including here on TUAW) are complaining that the screen is very dark and lacking in details. Above you can see a comparison on Apple Touch comparing the iPhone to the iPod touch (right). Over at the Apple Discussion boards a third-party LCD engineer weighs in with a possible answer: bad quality control in manufacturing led to an error with the anti-reflective coating. If this is right, he suggests the problem might be fixed at the factory in the near future. The upshot is simply that it may be worth waiting a bit if you want an iPod touch to see what Apple is going to do.

Wow, I had no idea there was this many problems. I was completely oblivious. Well, I got my ipod 16G here in Canada... laugh at me if u will, I paid $505.00ca
I haven't noticed a screen problem with my unit, The quality seemed excellent. However, I've been having some other issues with touch that no one else here has talked about. It's failed on me several times while switching from one app to another and has froze. I've had to reset it about seven times all together since last saturday, and twice, when it started back up the screen would not light up. It was running but, no light. I had to reset it after that and thigs would be fine.

Another issue I've had, well, maybe I don't know how to use itunes properly, but, I downloaded music from itunes wifi on the touch. which was cool. The next time I plugged it into charge all the tracks synched from the device to my itunes "purchased on davey boy's ipod" section, then gave me a notice saying the tracks were not authorized to play on this machine. I have a PC Compaq of somekind running windows XP media. so I assume that could be part of the problem. I cant sync them back to my ipod or play them on itunes. I went to file to sync but cannot select it.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to just return it tommorow and wait.

Although now I'm wondering if apple just shipped a whole bunch of refurbished units up here and made a kiiling. Im also a little pissed because they are not honouring a more accurate price to the canadian dollar. no offense my american friends but our dollar is parrallel.

The problems with iPod Touch are similar to what might be expected with any new technology.

On a lighter note, here's a funny video I found about the problems with the iPod Touch:

To the guy that said "The Ipod Touch is using a TN panel, which means the negative effect is a normal phenomenon" - Dude, you have no idea what you're talking about. I note that every other iPod I have, AND my iPhone, all have acceptable screens. Only my Touch is defective. Are you honestly trying to tell us that Apple purposely decided to use a crappy screen on the Touch, when they already have access to GOOD screens on their other products? As for the Touch being "cheap"- I have no idea what kind of Stupid Pills you're taking, but $300 for an 8-gig .mp3 player (and that's all the Touch is, thanks to the crappy screen) is hardly "cheap".

I just received my iPod Touch (16GB) via UPS-NDA today. I was really, REALLY nervous about the screen problem that everyone has been talking about. After all, I usually get cursed with the defective devices out there. I have a sickness that causes me to feel the need to always purchase the latest gadgets. In any case, I have syncronized all of my music, photos and several video files. I am VERY pleased to announce that my screen looks awesome! I have tried dark scenes and even played them in a dim-lit room. I have noticed a few little flaws but for the most part everything looks extremely crisp, well lit, and displays vibrant contrast (not over powering). I am SO relieved! My wife was already ticked that I spent $400 on a new toy so I didn't want her to badger me about how I should have waited for a model improvement. I have been an I.T. Technician for over 20 years and I can promise you that I am not a big fan of apple products. However, I have always liked their iPod music players and this iPod touch is an incredible invention. I would highly recommend this device to anyone looking for a remarkable media device. Of course you are limited to the 16GB of storage but I will be hard pressed to fill up this much space myself. The Touch is a bit heavier than what I thought it would be though. =o)

Hey guys settle. ok First Apple has one of the best QA available in IT I know I have been a reseller for over 20 years ... Yes they have had problems and frankly at least in Australia Apple deals with it with fast turnaround. Think about this Apple has 60% plus of the market in digital media ie ipods dont you think that there can be some that fail. Apple will resolve it garanteed colin

"Apple are losing it. They better start concentrating on engineering and quality control instead of music and video sales."

Easy tiger, you only hear about the bad cases; with the exception of the one guy who took time to say that he got one with a good screen. That rarely happens. So just because 15 out of 17 posts said they had a bad screen doesn't mean that 88% of the iPod Touch buyers have bad screens...

I've noticed this too but I'm wondering if it is a BUG or FEATURE....It looks great at a 45 degree angle or so, but right on it looks not so good.

I didn't notice this at first because whenever I was viewing the screen, I was holding it at that 45 degree angle. I don't watch movies on mine, but how do people typically hold this when they do watch movies???

Also, a great way to see this clearly is the album cover for "The Black Album" by Jay-z

#13 - Turning brightness up does help ever-so-slightly, but that's like saying "my car got dented real good, but if I squint, it's OK"... not something that should be acceptable for a paying user.

My Touch does have the issue, but it isn't very bad. Certainly better than some I've seen pics of. I want to exchange it, but at this point, I'd probably just end up with a worse one and end up going back-and-forth to the RDF Orifice. Tempted just to return it and wait for the second gen.

Would turning up the brightness fix the problem? Also, the ipod touch has auto-brightness enabled by default. Perhaps that contributes?
