iTouch Jailbreak Update: Still Not There
For those of you keeping track of the iTouch Jailbreak, here's a quick progress report. After I modified iPhuc to send arbitrary commands to the iTouch in recovery mode, the team has gotten as far as sending the StartRestore command (that's a third command on top of Goodbye and QueryType.) .If you'd like to try this out yourself, download a copy of iPhuc from the Google Code repository and use the following modified files: Restore, Recovery, and Main.

Your work is admirable and very, very appreciated. Many, myself included, base their future ipod purchasing decisions on your success!
Which is rather ironic, because before the iPod had the potential to work as a scheduling pda, I bought them happily. Now that the ability has been with-held, I'm disinclined to buy one in its naive state!

Agreed. Erica, I'm on IRC occasionally to check up and see if there's any way I can help, and I just really want to say thanks so much for all the time that you're devoting to this and to cracking the iTouch for everyone's enjoyment
Thanks so much, and I know that you'll crack it eventually, it's only a matter of time
Great job so far everyone on the iphone, now lets give the new kid on the block a chance......

I totally agree with Martin. I've been obsessively watching this progress in dire hopes that this thing gets hacked soon. I plan on buying one in the next 2 weeks but it's all hinged on whether or not it get's hacked. Thanks so much Erica!!

Same here. When Apple allows third-parties to write software, the game is over. They win. Stop being so bull-headed here and let people write software.

Thanks for posting the updates here. The technical details are well beyond me but it's exciting to see the story unfold.

I'm yet another "need to have Calendar add event capability" person. I'm really annoyed that Apple have intentionally removed it. If anyone can write a hack to implement it, I'd gladly pay a fair shareware price. Keep trying!

I wonder, If the hardware is as similar as apple made it sound i wonder if you could restore the iPod Touch with iPhone Firmware since thats already hacked.
The only problem with that i guess would be the hardware that the iPod Touch doesn't have (i.e. sim card, mic, camera) may keep it from functioning with the iPhone firmware.

Erica, you and the crew are doing a terrific job with all the obstacles Apple is putting in front of you. For all current users of the touch and iPhone, opening these platforms will allow added value. For folks like myself, Apple won't have new customers until::
1) hackers open the platform for everyone, or
2) Apple responds to the request to make an SDK available
This new wave of Apple products is disappointing because the possibilities and the excitement of "what could be" are being stifled by the one company that can often revolutionize. Now they seem to be losing their small company feel; guess it was only a matter of time.
Can the ego Apple; encourage the community.

This is just a guess but it could be that Apple is keeping the iPhone and the Touch in lock-down until the release of Leopard. At which time they will release an update to both which utilize Leopard only features.

Dear Steve,
Until these people succeed or you open up the iPod touch yourself I shall withhold my dollars from you.

How ironic that a company who continually spouts the "brave new world" rhetoric of innovation and revolution, stifle the very means of doing so disallowing 3rd parties to develop software that will make these "revolutionary" products, well... revolutionary.

So I'm trying to get a handle on the current state of things. I have a question for the hackes... If we assume that the jail isn't broken, might it still be possible to load a custom firmware? (I'm a big OSX fan, and I run macs, but honestly this iTouch I'm fondling fondly is such a sweep piece of hardware that I would run linux on it if I had to in order to use its full potential as a PDA platform).
Thanks!
