Qumana blogging client

The Qumana blog editor is a free cross-platform blogging client with support for a variety of blogging platforms including Wordpress, Blogger, MoveableType and others. It offers WYSIWYG editing, offline composing, and a variety of other features. Setting it up to work with a public blog is quite easy, requiring you just to enter the blog's root URL. It will then prompt you for your username and password and you're pretty much set.

Unfortunately, there are two catches. First, it appears to be a java application with all that entails for resource usage and UI inconsistency. Second, it's free because Qumana wants you to use their Q Ads service (which is built into the editor). Q Ads are text advertisements that you can manually add to your blog (by defining keywords) and Qumana will share some of the revenue with you. Fortunately it appears you can use the Qumana editor even without inserting Q Ads.

It's not as Mac-like as MarsEdit by a long shot, but if you'd like to try a free editor that works easily with a variety of blogging platforms then Qumana is worth a look. The Qumana blog editor is a free download from Qumana.

Ergh... enough with the ill-informed Java bashing.

"Resource usage" ... really not a significant issue on modern machines. The default heap size isn't even all that big. There are plenty of so-called "native" apps that are resource hogs.

"Interface inconsistency" ... the fault of developers, not of Java. In fact, I'd argue the upcoming Swing toolkits can give you more UI consistency -- and not only that, but do it *across platforms*, which is a relevant issue for Mac users wanting to boot multiple OSes.

You're right to be a snob about UI; I know I am. But blame brainless developers, not Java. If you want to develop a terrible UI using Cocoa, you certainly can (we've absolutely seen them). If you want to build a great UI in Java, you can, too.

All of that said, yeah, I'll be looking more at MarsEdit than this one.

yeah it works on Intel Macs... I've been using it for about 8 months. The edit is more than capable, but Ecto has better support for images. Qumana has no integration with iPhoto and you cannot drop images into your post from the clipboard and have them upload automatically, like you can with Ecto.

The inconsistent UI behavior is an issue. No scripting support, and if you close the main window you have to restart the app to get it to come back.

Clean tagging feature, better than Ecto.

BillG, I've tried MarsEdit myself at various times over the years and it never took with me. Right now I am using a Ecto and Qumana, the latter for quick posts the former for anything with images and extras (like Amazon links).

I am completely new to client application blogging, but have certainly seen MarsEdit mentioned a lot in the Mac world.

What am I missing about the differences between these two applications?

Qumana is WSIWYG, MarsEdit isn't, you have to use both the html editing window while looking at a Preview window.

Qumana seemed nicely integrated in that all the editing can be done in a single window per post, whereas MarsEdit has that Preview window and an extra "Media" window.

Can folks who know more about this than I do tell me why MarsEdit is better?

Honestly, I'm not looking to start a flame war, I just would love some information to evaluate.

No thanks on this one. Am I the only tired of ad supported stuff. I'd rather just buy a program. :)
