Mossberg reviews the iPod touch (he likes it)
If there was a grand poobah of tech journalists it would Walt Mossberg, the tech columnist for the Wall Street Journal. His opinion can make, or break, a product. Luckily for Apple Walt tends to love their stuff, and the iPod touch is no exception.
The iPod touch gets high praise for its iPod functionality, and the mobileSafari addition is welcome. Walt also enjoyed the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (which I am anxiously awaiting on my iPhone). There are some things he didn't like, though. The battery life fell short of Apple's specs, and the lack of physical controls (the iPhone has physical volume controls) makes it tough to use the iPod touch when it isn't in your hand. The lack of a mail program also gets Walt's goat, but he chalks it up to Apple not wanting to compete too much with the more expensive iPhone (which has a mail program built in).
TUAW readers, are you enjoying your iPod touch as much as Walt?

"So far, all I heard them announce and offer was a touch-screen iPod."
Uhm, with a WiFi antenna built in and a web browser as the first button on the main screen. You really need to have Apple tell you this is more than a media player? Read between the lines and see what everyone else sees - an awful lot of corrections fluid doing an awful lot of deleting.
I came downtown to buy one of these right now, with iPhones unavailable here in Canada, specifically wanting it for mobile blogging, and found it quite severely limitted.
I'm now walking out of the Apple Store I'm writing this from without the iPod Touch I came to buy - you hear me, Apple??
What about people that want the drive space and the interface. Where's the 160gb Ipod touch apple?

At NO time did ANYONE at Apple promise you a PDA. The said this is an iPod, which is a media player, not a PDA. iPods were never PDAs, so I fail to see how changing the form factor and input method would make you think they'd suddenly make their media player into a PDA.
As an iPod, the touch has a lot of cool features and extras. Instead of complaining that your media player doesn't act like a PDA, why not focus on the fact that your media player does things it could never do before?
When Apple is ready to re-enter the PDA market, they'll let you know and announce it in BIG LOUD LETTERS. So far, all I heard them announce and offer was a touch-screen iPod. Knowing that previous iPods weren't capable of adding calendar events or sending email or checking stocks, I don't understand why anyone would expect that a new model of the iPod would do these things!
"The iPod touch is a media player device. Complaining that it doesn't replace your PDA is just lame."
C'mon Anthony! It's called the iTouch. Now it's an input device as well. Give me a real legit reason you can't input into iCal. Who can blame people for wanting a small function enabled that gets rid of a redundant "bat belt" item like a Palm?
@19 - Not complaining, just observing.
Plus, for most of us not living in iPhone areas (life exists outside of USA you know), there isn't an iPhone v iPod touch choice that you have.
I'm in no hurry though, happy to let you USA based folk to the beta testing for the rest of us...
@ calendar / email posts,
The iPod touch is a media player device. Complaining that it doesn't replace your PDA is just lame.
Why do you need a remote for something that's supposed to go in your pocket?

"Prepared for Shipment"
I'm down with you Jerri. I had my $50 Apple gift card in hand, ready to pick up an iTouch other day, and then the reality of the iCal input and lack of a mail app stopped me cold. I've been an Apple user (yeah, fanboy) since 1983, and it took these foolish little gimp steps by Apple to get my dander up enough to email them a complaint. I have a Palm Tungsten E2 I'd love to throw aside, but without iCal input, I might as well just keep using my 3G iPod. And, as a .Mac subscriber, don't I deserve a chance to use a mail app if I'm on wifi? So why not just get an iPhone? Well, I already have a large family plan phone that's stuck on T-mobile, don't need the added monthly costs of a data plan, and 8gb is just too small. I really hope that Apple didn't make a deal with the devil (ATT), that's forcing contractual limitations on their other products for years to come. I hope Steve hears out our strong opinions, and reconsiders these limitations. Like that little rebate incident he had to deal with recently.
