I've always maintained that a good Dashboard widget should be simple with a well-defined, useful purpose that requires it to be close at hand. The Refurb Store widget meets my desiderata perfectly. All it does is display the latest deals from the US Apple Store Special Deals section on refurbished equipment. Having the deals in the Dashboard is a great way to keep on top of new stuff so you can jump right on them when they appear. I've always had good luck with refurbished stuff from Apple, all of which carries Apple's normal warranty. The Refurb Store widget is a free download from Widgetinfo.
Thanks Simo!

Is anyone else having trouble having this widget fit on your screen when you're viewing the Mac refurb list?
I guess 1600 x 1200 is isn't enough pixels...

Adrian, I have the same problem. You can click and drag it up to see the bottom list. It definitely needs a scroll on it. Other than that, it's a great widget.

A scrollbar would be lovely. And a way to sort the prices from high to low, would also be excellent.
Great idea though!

Please note the widget developer is collecting affiliate commissions on this.
It'd be nice if he/she would tell us this up front.

Shame on you, TUAW, for promoting an AFFILIATE without full disclosure.
Not cool.

@11: I didn't know; indeed how could I have known given that there's nothing on the page about it? If you're tut-tutting anyone it should be the dev. I agree he should be upfront about it, but to some degree what difference does it make? You get a piece of software that's useful to you, and the dev gets a kickback. I agree they should have told us, but as long as it doesn't cost the user anything does it really matter that much?

I got a refurb PowerBook G3 (Pismo) back when those were around. It
was always a little flakey... prone to freezing or crashing (which a
great deal of troubleshooting was unable to fully resolve), and the
DVD-ROM died only a few months after the warranty expired.I know that
was a long time ago, but every time I reconsider buying refurbished,
those memories haunt me.

I'm a recent "switcher" and for a long time I have been monitoring the refurb of the Apple France Store, trying to grab one of those new macbooks. But these bargains are rare and difficult to catch. That's the reason why I built a new free-to-use tool to get notified when new products arrive on the refurb of various Apple Store (currently: US, UK, France, Belgium, Swiss, new stores will be added)...
This tool located at http://debin.net/apple_refurb/ builds news feeds (RSS) on demand based on what the user wants to monitor : which store (US, UK, France, Belgium, Swiss), what kind of product (Mac, iPod, Macbook, iPhone...) and the kind of feed : only new products currently available, all history of new products (even those not available any more), all history (all products (dis)apparition) - very useful to learn when is the right time to buy a specific product before it disappears.
These feeds are updated every five to ten minutes.
