CrossOver 6.2 supports Team Fortress 2

The latest version of CrossOver, Codeweavers' Mac and Linux application designed to get Windows games and applications working on those systems, has been released. CrossOver 6.2, now available, features a number of different updates both to increase compatibility and to make Windows applications run faster than ever.

And first among these updates is the fact that it will now run Team Fortress 2 right out of Valve's new Orange Box, as seen in the video above (caution: awkward narrative and bad acting ahead-- skip to about 2:09 to see the actual product). They're also saying it features improvements when working with Outlook, and, in the strangest feature description ever, they say it really will work much faster-- when you install Leopard.

CrossOver is available as a free trial on their website, and to promote the new release, you can get it for 10% off when you enter "zomg" as a special deal in the shopping cart. Has anyone tried running TF2 in Boot Camp yet? If that doesn't work so well, and you've really got to play Valve's new game, CrossOver might be the way to go.

Nick, I also have a black macbook and have purchased the orange box. What resolution are you running TF2 at? And are you running it in Crossover's windowed mode? Or TF2's windowed mode? I can't seem to get it to run in Crossover's windowed mode. Thanks in advance. Also, you can email me at clarence at wedontsmell dot com. It'd be cool to get a conversation going about tf2 on the mb.

I can't wait for Team Fortress 2! We already set up a server with co-location from Nationwide Bandwidth 67.90.47.47, (a must to every server owner, imo) but are waiting for the official release :)

Will someone let me know, what would be the hypothetical way to buy this before I try it?

Use crossover to install steam then buy orange box and then play?

Or wait for the retail and install it with that?

Yes, I really mean a "Macbook" and not the pro model. Its the C2D mid-2007 model with 2GB of RAM. I'm a Team Fortress nut from way back and I was pleasantly surprised that my Macbook plays many more games acceptably than I expected it would. I can play Civ IV on it, Half-life 2 is acceptable so far and TF2 has been great under Crossover Mac 6.2 with the only exception being the chat text. I spent many hours using iDefrag so I could get bootcamp to create a new partition and install XP and then the video just had all kinds of problems in TF2. I think the key is to have 2GB of RAM for decent gaming on the macbook because the processor is really quite fast, its just that you want to have as much RAM available for the system to use. I do confess that I find TF2 plays best in windowed mode (i auto hide the dock while playing, not sure if that gains any fps or not) and I set it to medium models and low textures. The visuals are still better than TFC on max and I do enjoy the game. I have found that for more "hardcore" TF fans, Fortress Forever is a better fortress game than TF2, but that's a matter of taste. I just can't get used to not having grenades for some reason. Its weird, but still fun.

Pepe (#20) - yes, Half-life 2 does run in crossover on a black macbook. I haven't done a lot of testing yet, and have yet to get to any real action heavy scenes, but the game does indeed install and start fine. I don't have bootcamp set up, and don't feel a need to test it in vmware, as it works fine in crossover so far. The only problem was installing it - despite having a purchased version with the 5 cd's, installing it from the cds failed during the 4th disk - maybe a bad disk. So I had to use the steam app to dl it, which took 3 hours on my cable modem.

Ummm yeah, bootcamp (i.e. native windows) still blows crossover away in terms of performance and quality level.

Just go purchase windows, no need for parallels or vmware.

Thank god. I used to be obsessed with TFC, and this was my big regret for switching over to a mac recently...not being able to get my fix.
