Joost releases beta 1.0 to public

This blew by us earlier in the week, but in case you haven't grabbed it yet, the Joost beta 1.0 is now available for download to the public. So all of us plebians who haven't gotten invites to try it out yet can now inspect the groovy IPTV viewer that everyone's been talking about (and running on AppleTV) for months.

There is one catch that will trip up a few of us newcomers: Joost is still only for Intel Macs, so our PowerPC brethren are left out in the cold watching TV the old fashioned way-- on a television (and at normal quality with no lag-- whoops, low blow?).

The latest release also adds a few new features, including faster streaming for low bandwith connections (touche), and a few other interface tweaks. Joost is available for free, now to anyone, over on the website.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I cancelled my account, they said of the forum of Joost a PPC version was in the works (and that was half a year ago).

Joost, how friggin stupid do you have to be? Do the maths it doesn't even involve anything complicated.

How many PPC OS X users are out there and how many Intel Mac users are out there? See where 70% of your Mac user base is? I bet after 3 months they'll stop Mac developement, "because there wasn't enough demand".

You're cutting off any significant demand yourselves, morons.

Unfortunately it appears Joost has given up on PPC support entirely for the time being. (Note that just because they might be able to compile a PPC version doesn't mean it would necessarily be usable...)

This was posted on the Joost forum by someone identified as a Joost employee on 9/25:

"We're currently working on improving the performance of the PC and Intel-based Mac versions available today. Although there has been demand for a Mac PPC version of Joost, we have to prioritize our business objectives. As a result, we do not have plans to release a Mac PPC version at this time."

@Furies: I don't want to slow you down on your race to be offended, but if you reread the post you will see that the "arrogant fool of a blogger" was taking a shot at Joost, not at your non-intel Mac.

Looks like someone needs to contradict this arrogant fool of a blogger. I have enjoyed my iBook G4 with 1 gig of RAM LAG FREE for the past 2 years, thank you very much. I've programmed, compiled, and downloaded to the point of abuse without an ounce of sputter from this ole' machine. I don't need your ignorant, Microsoft like attitude to attempt to downgrade my system *btw, what kind of person insults 70% of the Mac user base?* Sorry you think we Power PC users are SOOOOOOO inferior to your god all-mighty overpriced Intel Macs.

Another question that goes out to the developers of Boost: Why make an Intel only application on Mac OS X? Are you stupid or something? It takes ONE check of a check box to make it usable by all computer's Apple makes....unless your using platform specific source, which I somehow doubt if your writing the application in Objective C, C++, or ANSI C.

I do not understand the point of Joost. I also deleted it. It is about as pointless as my Apple TV. I wish I could delete it and get my money back. Both share a common problem. Lack of content.

I don't know about porting to the iPod, yet.
I've been using Joost for almost a year now
on an Intel iMac C2D and a MacBook C2D.
I would suggest trying Wi-Fi via iPod touch.
Have not heard about iPhone experiences...
Can anyone affirm if it works on handhelds?
Thanks in adavance!
(Thanks, also, TUAW for posting this story.)
I would love to see this go commercial soon.

It's a neat idea, but the content is craptastic at best.

Does anyone know if they added more content? I watched it for one day, then deleted it due to lack of content.
