Replace the Finder with Quicksilver
Our love of Quicksilver, the sometimes inscrutable application launcher (and much more) runs deep, but Daniel over at waferbaby has us beat. It would seem Daniel isn't a big fan of the Finder and he is crazy for Quicksilver. Clearly, it took the next obvious step and replaced the Finder with Quicksilver. Read his post for the details, but be warned it isn't for the faint of heart.

There, three non iPhone/iTouch posts in a row for the "Oh geez not another iPhone post on TUAW!" whiners.

I love it, but I don't think I can live without Finder. I mean I did grow up on System 6. I tend to use Quicksilver for productivity and a launcher and spotlight for file management.

I really like all of the iPhone posts. This is one of my sources for good iPhone news and tips. Although I love everything Apple just about, so it is good to have other things on here.
I would love to see a break down and review of Filemaker Pro 9 if it would be possible. I want to use it to make a database that would allow me to create a website that pulls the information in a user freindly fashion, but I have never used the software so I am not sure how good it is at allowing you to do this.

Quicksilver would always break drag and drop, have they fixed that yet?

@1: More than that.. Here's a post that tells you how to use Mac OS X in a way other than Apple originally intentioned. OH MY GOD.

@David Scrivner: Not sure what you mean, but the Web Tools in FMP 8.5 are really nice, so I'd imagine those in 9 are similar.

I don't understand all the complaining about the finder. What's wrong with it? Give me some examples of why it's so intolerable.
I've tried Quicksilver and I didn't like it. If there's one thing I hate it's keyboard shortcuts. I know, I know, everyone's going to flame me, but to me remembering crazy key combos is like remembering DOS command syntax back in the day.

I never use the finder anymore...
I personally like launchbar though, if i really need to find something, I use launch bar to open it, or spoghtlight or navigate the finder in launchbar...

Whiplash: I totally agree with you. No one has ever been able to explain what is so wrong with the Finder. I think it's just in the way you use it. There are many possible ways to do so and most problems I've heard are just because the user didn't find the right way to do what they want (even though it was there).
Quicksilver is a huge step backwards to me. It's much more complicated and unintuitive. Of course, the same is true for me with it as I said about Finder haters, I probably just haven't figured out how to use it properly. Also, maybe I don't use quite as many apps as other people because I can fit most of the things I really use neatly on the Dock which is always right there.

I'm with you on the dislike of Quicksilver. I found it unwieldy and awkward. It might be great for those guys who are deep into the keyboard shortcuts, but I've always found it easier to just click on what I want. I don't see Quicksilver being less work by any means.
And yes, I bet a lot of Quicksilver lovers are people who have a dozen apps running at the same time, all the time.

Only a dozen? Well, when you have 10GB of RAM in the box, the only problem is jumping to the one you want. Ok, right now I only have 8 running, but I haven't picked up full steam yet.
What I love about QS: I think about what I want and just start typing. It usually finds it for me - way, way faster than hunting and clicking around in the finder. Speed is really important, too - the biggest obstacle is now the speed of the interface (or the operator), not the hardware anymore. QS helps me be fast.
Yes, those of us who need all those apps tend to be power users for whom QS fits their mindset and approach to working. There's more than one kind of user, obviously - use what works for you.
