The Apple TV is a flop. Plus, it shouldn't even be mentioned n the same breath as the Mac mini. The Mac mini is a true desktop computer. The Apple TV is a hackable POS at best.

The TV (AppleTV) does what it's supposed to do and does it well. Just because you have no need for such a device does not make it a POS.
Moreover, the TV is just about as powerful as a Mac Mini, and can be hacked to act like a Desktop computer, so you are completely wrong and displaying your naievity with your comment, JohnPQ. Buzz off.

Agreed. And I thought 8.25% here in Texas was bad..

Yeah, it's got a lot of processing power and memory expansion. No FW, optical drive or Gigabit Ethernet either. That's one hell of a "computer". But then again, I'm sure that's all the computing power a person of your talents requires. Maybe you should buzz off.

9.75% is bad? You should see the UK tax! First - everything is more expensive here already, than they add another 17.5% of "Value Added Tax" - VAT!

Yes, Apple TV can be hacked to become more competent media player, but is it just as powerful as Mac mini? Mac mini can play 1080p. Mac mini can output multi-channel audio out of the box. Mac mini has faster dual core CPU. Mac mini can accommodate larger hard disk and more memory. The list goes on.

I live in the Boro too, that 9.75% is a biatch. Especially since it applies to everything, prepared food included. Good thing TN offers 2 tax free weekends every year when I buy all my Mac goodies!!!

No joy here in Harrisburg, PA. Went up to the East Shore Sam's and had them do a search on the item number (659405). It was listed in the computer as a "deleted item" with 0 in stock, last list price was $289.99. The nice customer service person also checked other Sam's within 30 miles and said that York, PA had 3 in stock at $289.99.
I showed her the image of the receipt (via my blackberry) and she said that it was possible it was a display model and/or the last one they had in stock in order to have a price that low.
As a bit of a side note- the computer brought it up as "ITV" for a short description... curious.

I'm thinking it was a one-off thing; it's still at full price in Knoxville. Interestingly, the Apple TV does not appear on the Sams Club site.

Forget paying $300 for AppleTV. Get a Mediagate MG-25. The 120gb drive is half the price, and it's smaller, plays lots more formats, and is a high-definition drive as well.
I plug one end of mine into the TV, and the other end into my Airport Extreme's USB port, allowing me to wirelessly transfer content. It's great.

Wait, so Apple sells a $300 Mac Mini that has HDMI output or are people just being jerks?
Put your money where your mouth is part 2: show me a *new* (not used) device that will stream content from a centralized source via Wireless N to connect to my home theater via HDMI. If it does not a) work with content stored in iTunes (just stored, no DRM) b) does not support at least 720p or c) costs more than $400 you automatically fail. GO!

I called the stores in my area (Middle TN), including the one in the 'Boro, and the guy told me it was that price cause it the last one left in stock. It's stil $289 everywhere else. FYI for those without Sam's memberships, the Circuit City in Cooll Springs has the AppleTV for $289 as well.
