Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 is available
If you've got Apple Remote Desktop installed, launch Software Update. Version 3.2 is available, and includes these changes:- Compatibility with Mac OS X Leopard
- Getting status and connecting to computers on slow networks
- Typing accented characters on European language keyboards
- Using Open Application tasks on Intel-based Macs
- Accurately reporting operating system version numbers
Unfortunately, my complaint has not been addressed. While the box says "Apple Remote Desktop," the application on my Mac says "Remote Desktop." That irks me.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Ah! Finally, 10.4.10 reads as 10.4.10...

An honest question, maybe someone could help me out and answer:
Whats the advantage for using this verses something like chicken of the VNC, or some other VNC client? Can you control a computer outside your LAN?

Leopard compatibility !! !FINALLY ! PRAISE THE LORD !
It's been months that I've been running COT instead of ARD because version 3.1 would not run on 10.5 under any circumstance.

I just installed the update. However, all the clients still showed up as 10.4.9.
ARD does more than just VNC AFAIK.

Lies! It is not an oversight that Remote Desktop is not Apple Remote Desktop. It is supposed to be that way! You don't see iLife and iWork apps named "Apple iWeb," Aperture, Safari and Mail, likewise are not labeled as such.
Because your apps folder alphabetizes, and when you're looking for an app you're looking for the name, not the brand. This is one of my biggest pet peeves about Creative Suite. I know it's Adobe's app, there's no reason it needs to say "Adobe Photoshop."
Shame on TUAW for propagating a personal pet peeve of mine!

ARD is more then just VNC. You can control the screen/computer like VNC but you can also do much more. Unix scripts, install packages, set boot drives, hardware/software info and versioning differences, spotlight searching of remote computers, user reports, software usage, all kinds of more advanced things. Task server is a very cool feature too. You can schedule say a 10.4.11 update at 10pm when you are at the bar ;)

One thing you can't do (unless it's changed in the new version) is Copy and Paste. Arrgh.
ARD uses VNC (or derivative) for it display and offers other remote tasks that don't require opening a display to the destination computer. I didn't say "client" because that terminology is used differently in different products.

Just in case... I just noticed I haven't updated this machine to ARD 3.x and am still running 2.x. So if C&P is part of 3.x, excuse that comment.

7/8 LOL bruno. Yes, you can send your clipboard to a remote machine or retrieve a clipboard in ARD 3.

When are we going to get an officially Apple-supported dumbed-down version of Remote Desktop for cheaper (or built into the OS)? Or an official Apple viewer for use on Windows?
I know VNC exists but when you stick an Apple logo on something, you know it can't be total shit (1/2 shit maybe).

The thing that irks me is that Leopard seems to have all this "Screen sharing" built into the OS, so how will that affect ARD sales?
And I love ARD, if for no other reason than selecting all the computers that are on, and watching all the little monitors on the rotating cube. Truely amazing.

Sam W:
systemupdate -i -a
Combine with launchctl, and you can do this with ssh and don't need screen sharing.

After updating my MacBook's copy ARD to 3.2.1 and pushing the client updater out to my remote servers, I'm officially hosed and locked out of all of them. Stand clear of this update for a while guys. I'm reduced to Chicken of the VNC until I can figure out what's wrong here..

I would recommend ppl wait on this update. A number of techs I know have updated and are now locked out of their computers and are loocking at doing a reinstall of the old app and clients. Check out this...

ARD is pretty cool, and I love the interface, but why, after all these years is the screen sharing still slower then antique software like Timbuktu?

ARD... yep, that's Apple's VNC server. And it disconnects half the time and doesn't play nice with TightVNC on a Linux laptop. Nope, I use Vineserver for VNC access. It's stable on Tiger and works much better.

Actually, I just watched the Leopard guided tour, and it looks to me like (as long as both Macs run Leopard) iChat will be the poor man's ARD... The sharing desktops function gives you control over their computer. Pretty neat, actually.
I think this is what 11 meant with his cryptic "Oct. 26"

I can't believe Apple is still trying to charge for this functionality. Hasn't this been built into Windows since at least XP? This is one of those very-few-things left that push me away from full-time OSX.
