Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 is available

If you've got Apple Remote Desktop installed, launch Software Update. Version 3.2 is available, and includes these changes:
  • Compatibility with Mac OS X Leopard
  • Getting status and connecting to computers on slow networks
  • Typing accented characters on European language keyboards
  • Using Open Application tasks on Intel-based Macs
  • Accurately reporting operating system version numbers
There's more, of course, and you can view the full changelog here.

Unfortunately, my complaint has not been addressed. While the box says "Apple Remote Desktop," the application on my Mac says "Remote Desktop." That irks me.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I installed this update on my MacBook. It then went screwy. When I powered off and closed the laptop the light on the front lit up and it seems to have gone into sleep mode. When I tried to start it nothing happened and I had to hold the power button in to make it "turn off". Then I could hit the power button to turn it back on, but I got a "MacOS didn't start correctly" error. I reinstalled Leopard and it worked fine until I installed the update again, same problem. I am now on my third install and will NOT be putting this fix in this time :-)

I can't believe Apple is still trying to charge for this functionality. Hasn't this been built into Windows since at least XP? This is one of those very-few-things left that push me away from full-time OSX.

Actually, I just watched the Leopard guided tour, and it looks to me like (as long as both Macs run Leopard) iChat will be the poor man's ARD... The sharing desktops function gives you control over their computer. Pretty neat, actually.

I think this is what 11 meant with his cryptic "Oct. 26"

ARD... yep, that's Apple's VNC server. And it disconnects half the time and doesn't play nice with TightVNC on a Linux laptop. Nope, I use Vineserver for VNC access. It's stable on Tiger and works much better.

ARD is pretty cool, and I love the interface, but why, after all these years is the screen sharing still slower then antique software like Timbuktu?

I would recommend ppl wait on this update. A number of techs I know have updated and are now locked out of their computers and are loocking at doing a reinstall of the old app and clients. Check out this...

After updating my MacBook's copy ARD to 3.2.1 and pushing the client updater out to my remote servers, I'm officially hosed and locked out of all of them. Stand clear of this update for a while guys. I'm reduced to Chicken of the VNC until I can figure out what's wrong here..

Sam W:
systemupdate -i -a

Combine with launchctl, and you can do this with ssh and don't need screen sharing.
