TUAW's new background for your computer
Eagle-eyed readers have noticed that TUAW's look has changed a little as of late. We've 'Leoparded up' the site just a bit, taking some design cues from Apple's soon to be released OS.As with any redesign the comments have run the gamut from "It is horrible!" to "Where can I download that Desktop?" We'll be refining the design over the coming months, so keep the comments coming. That being said, for those of you who want to decorate your Mac with a TUAW desktop head on over here and download it for yourself. It isn't the highest resolution, but it still looks good on my 24 inch iMac.

Eagle-eyed? LOL. I noticed it immediately...it is fairly obvious, especially since every page reloads the content area (what the eff is up with that anyway?) and shows the background for 2 or 3 seconds before anything else loads.
Anyway, I quite like it. Guess I have a new wallpaper, at least for a bit. (Previously had the ugly old Leopard grass w/ dew pic...don't know why. I hate that thing)

No offense TUAW, but I'd have preferred if your logo wasn't layered on top of the image, I'm a minimalist and I can't use it now. Any chance you might link to a clean version?
P.S. I'll still read the site :)

Don't want to bash, but...
You write about macs every day, but you have absolutly no sense for aesthetics. Your site looks better as a feed, i cjust can't browse this anymore. Not even masked the (ugly) logo for your new background--what's with the A?
Guys, get someone to work on your looks.

Hmmm....I'm not sure what to think of it. It's leaning toward the ugly side. I think it would be better if the "nebula" (?) weren't so fuzzy looking and out of focus (and maybe not quite so "greenish").

The contrast between your solid white site and the black frame showing the remnants of the image on both sides is WAY too much. At least the old blue wasn't such an assault on the eyes. Couldn't some designer there tell you that? Why butt solid white against solid black? I may have to start reading the feed instead.

the new tuaw background looks ugly for those of us with wide screens, it doesn't tile like the old ones

I'm not a fan either. Maybe it just takes a bit of getting use to.

You guys want to cut out the white in the stem of your apple logo?

If you want to change TUAW's look, it's got to be more than just a (badly-fitting) background. I'd like to see TUAW get a whole new look (just like Engadget and Joystiq have their own thing), and might I recommend more subtle colours like the iTunes 7 grays and purples? Seems like a better choice if you want a black background.

It's a poorly distorted space image - I know you're trying to ride the leopard look, but you can find higher quality/refined digital images that have a space look; or atleast clean up the edges so it's not a hard vertical dividing line to black.
So either replace the space image with one more crisp and refined, or do a complete replacement and use the grass leopard backdrop.

I agree with uros - TUAW has to be next on the list of Weblogs Inc sites to get a full redesign, optimized for widescreens please!

Sorry for piling on but count me in the group of people who hate the current slow-loading background image. Please bring the old one back.

Haha, I thought it was for Halloween. A bit cheesy guys.
One more thing, why does your logo have a reflection and a shadow? Not cool. It looks like an outdated logo (system 7 era) with some afterthought effects to freshen it up. Sorry, not trying to rub salt in the wound, but you could use a bit of an aesthetic overhaul...since you brought it up.

It looks like a cheesy background I would have used when i first started web developing in 96 and would put words in yellow on a background like this.
I really liked the old look. I agree with the person who uses the rss view. It looks so much better than the new look.

I'm with 17. Chip. If you would not have said anything I would have been confused during Thanksgiving and Christmas time.

I don't care for it either. The site is a mess as it is, especially the jumbled right side, and reloading the main content area EVERY refresh is annoying. Lose the background, it sucks.
Good thing we're all not superficial. At least you have a decent personality. Just have to put on my beer goggles to enjoy.
