Lion just doesn't sound right for some reason. Read the past codenames aloud, and then Say "Mac OS X 10.6 Lion". It sounds kinda pansy.
I was thinking about this a couple days ago. I like what's on the list. Lynx and Cougar could be definite possibilities.

Lion and lyin' are homonyms. They promise features and don't deliver? Lying? Geez, I thought that was an easy one.

Lynx or Cougar, as apple has trademarks on these.

Cougar is perfect, because, you know, OS X is old but still hot. :)

A Cougar is the exact same thing as a Puma. So it can't be that.

I say ocelot is the runaway winner. Not only is ocelot the coolest cat name going, but OCELOTS anagrams to COOLEST.

#8 - Apple may have trademarked Lynx, but I imagine these guys have done so already as well:

NEWS FLASH: Apple picks names based on what said names imply not on what people on Internet forums think sounds cool.
Which is why "Liger" won't make it. It's a combination of two species, so why the hell would Apple refer to a generation-old version of the OS (Tiger) as one of those two? Would the consumer only be getting half-new features? You must think of what the name actually means. Tiger was great, because they are very powerful yet graceful creatures. A cheetah is fast. Etcetera.
If they simply called it ULTRA SUPER DELUXE WILDCAT or whatever person thought just sounds cool, they wouldn't be very different from every other company, would they? It's all about the marketing. No one will know what the hell "Liger" means.

To contribute, here's this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felidae
This has all the cat names that Apple would probably choose from. Sadly guys, "Liger" is on the list.
Though I agree it's not great-sounding, I'm throwing my hat in for "Lion," mainly because it's the only member of the genus Panthera that hasn't been taken yet.
