New iPod touch ad was created by student, reuses Zune tune
As many, many readers noted, a new iPod touch ad appeared on TV over the weekend, and Apple has now posted it on their site. There's a long story behind this one that I hadn't heard yet, it would seem that the ad is a product of TBWA/Chiat/Day, just like most of Apple's ads, but the idea actually came from an 18-year-old English guy named Nick Haley. Nick created the ad (his original cut is above) back in September as a homage to Apple's new iPod, and it looks like someone in Cupertino noticed (or at least someone on Madison Avenue).
This might be old news to most of you, but I hadn't heard it and it's a good story. Apple has a reputation for getting their advertising from other sources, and it's nice to see them acknowledge an ad that came from someone who really loves their products.
Special thanks to reader running for figuring this one out for us: the song used in the ad is actually the same one used in this super weird Zune ad from last year. Even when Apple is completely upfront about the origin of their ad, they can't seem to keep from colliding with competitors in the same space.
Update: Calling it the iTouch was completely accidental, and I apologize. You guys are right-- it's the iPod touch, and I'm sorry for mistaking it. I guess the word was sitting in my brain and just wanted to come out.

iTouch, iTouch, iTouch!
yer all gettin touchy about the proper vernacular, doncha think?
iTouch annoys me to no end. When my iPod touch (touch is never capitalized fyi) was in for service it was repeatedly referred to as an "iTouch" by the Apple customer service and techinal support people. When Apple employees get it wrong, you know it's common. I hope it doesn't become more prevalent.

How about not let irrelevant stuff get to you? I mean, if someone's shouting in your ear all the time, get upset. But if a few people happen to use the "incorrect" name for a product, why should it matter to you? I call my MacBook an iBook half the time. Does that bother you? If so, *WHY*? It's not on the same level as people butchering the English language by misusing 's and your/you're. If you want something to be upset about that doesn't effect you, why not something at least RELEVANT like the genocide in Darfur, or poor, poor Ellen and her puppy?
I mean, get a GRIP people!
Microsoft: "You are an anthropomorphic deer on a crowded, dystopian bus. A loud, unpleasant lion befriends you and takes you to the movies and on a camping trip, but he feels it is appropriate to snack on your extremities. All of that is OK, though, because you have the connection of music."
HA!!!!!!!!!!!
Like it or not, the name "iTouch" is going to stick in the vernacular with a certain percentage of the population, just like those fools who still insist on calling the Mac Mini the "Mini Mac." I personally find this misappellation as annoying as the next guy, but what can you do?

"iPod touch, not iTouch, please."
"Actually, I've heard a lot of people call it the iTouch, and it pisses me off to no end."
"iTouch, what is that? Oh! You mean the iPod touch."
Wow. I had no idea that it was SO OFFENSIVE to so many people (and it had to be pretty bad to get you folks to comment about it, right?) to call the iPod touch the iTouch. If seeing/hearing 'iTouch' is the worst thing in your life, I envy you. What's it like in Cloudcookooland, where everything is perfect (or you are, at any rate) and nobody ever makes an error?
Tell you what. Why don't you go back to listening to your iTouches and leave poor Mike alone?
oh yeah, and the add is very cool too.

APparently they flew him into California where they helped him recreate the HD version of the ad we see on TV. He got the little details right, the flips and turns, and quick camera movements. Nice job dude, congrats.
