Logitech mouse control in Leopard
We've mentioned the problems folks have had with the Leopard upgrade with unsanity's APE installed. As Gruber points out, however, the same problem can affect people who have installed the Logitech Control Center software that comes with Logitech mice and keyboards, because LCC apparently uses APE behind the scenes. While some finger wagging is due to Logitech for this, the question now comes up as to what to use instead of LCC to gain access to all the buttons. It turns out that there are at least three options: USB Overdrive ($20), SteerMouse ($20), and ControllerMate ($15), all of which are now Leopard compatible. Of the three, I've only used ControllerMate myself and would recommend it. However, any of the three should give you back control of your Logitech mouse -- it's just a shame you have to spend extra money to get this kind of functionality.[via Daring Fireball]

I've run into the same issues as most of you and the only problem I was running into was my mouse wasn't recognized after awaking from sleep. Since I did two things before testing this theory, I'll just post both of them to see if it helps anyone.
Computer: Dual 2.7ghz G5 w/ dual 20" ACD's, 2gb Apple RAM, Logitech MX1000 mouse, apple keyboard.
First thing I did was move the USB plug from my PCI USB card to the USB port on the back of one ACD (plugged into a built-in USB on back of computer).
In addition, I also removed the Logitech Control Center from the Login Items for my User (only user on system).
I have since put the computer to sleep and woke it up and it worked like it should. I have also since restarted and shut down the computer and both times it has come back up and worked.
Hope this helps
All I wanted to do was map application specific functions to the buttons on my logitech G5 mouse. I couldn't get Controllermate to work. The interface would be powerful and flexible if it worked, but it is also a cludge to use. I mapped two commands into the application itself
1. F14
2. OPTION F14
Then I set the mouse button 5 to F14
USB Overdrive X would only treat button 5 as F14 and never recognized the use of the OPTION key. SteerMouse is the only one of the programs that worked fully as expected and successfully allowed me to use the keyboard OPTION key with the mouse button 5 (F14) at the same time for a shortcut.

I'm baffled how people can say the Logitech control panel works fine under Leopard when it depends on APE, which is not supposed to function under Leopard. Is it safe to reinstall APE? Is it working?
I've tried using USB Overdrive, but it doens't seem to recognise the MX Revolution. The support pages for that says you must uninstall the Logitech kernal extension before USB Overdrive will work. It doesn't tell you how to do this or where it might be found.
There's no uninstaller for the Logitech package in the upgrade download. Their support and website on this issue is appalling and they should be ashamed.
Anyone got any advice on how to do a complete manual uninstall of everything installed by Logitech, including kernal extensions?
I'd agree that the previous versions of the Logitech software (v2.14 and v2.22)were very dodgy indeed, but since they released the latest version the software is pretty much flawless. For all the people having problems - which version do you have installed?

I have not used the third party tools for too long but one of the things I know I can say so far is that Steermouse seems to be one of the better ones for it's GUI and feature capabilities. It can basically understand EVERY button on my mouse (MX Revolution) including the ability to set a search function using any key combination.
One thing I like with LCC that I am not able to do with any of the third party tools is to disable the Click to Click function of the Scroll Wheel. Granted Steermouse is powerful enough that it understands and allows for click to click when moving slowly and then unlock into free spin when going very quickly which I think is great! I just would love to have that option to turn it off and leave it in free spin mode all the time.
LCC does make customizations easier to understand and do since some of it is already preset for you but if you want anything else outside of LCC's options then you will be SOL.
Again, I have not used the third party tools too much yet to fully understand their potential/limits but as of right now Steermouse seems to be the best of the 3 options listed in this article.

I have that mouse and have been trying to figure out why my machine keeps crashing. It crashes when I wake it up. Not every time, but it's done it at least 4 times since installing it Friday. =s
