In what appears to be a clear case of "Mental Health Day Syndrome," the .Mac website has been down for much of the afternoon. Email and Homepage/iWeb services appear to be up, though, and I'm able to connect to my iDisk, so the plumbing is still operational. Our tipsters note that the site was down for quite a while before the 'maintenance' page went up, so it's possible that this is not a planned outage. If we hear anything else we'll pass it
along. Update: Although I personally can get to the services noted above, comments point out that the .Mac service page is showing red lights across the board except for some users able to get mail.
Update 2: As of 5:05pm ET it looks like everything is green again, with the exception of .Mac Sync still showing issues for some users.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Red dots for all except the mail service, which is orange. Hoping that they're taking this opportunity to improve the Back to My Mac service...

Yes, orange would be correct. My email has been spotty most of the day with it being off more times than on.

Back To My Mac was the first thing I'd heard about that made me think favorably of that service. So what was wrong with it on launch? Downtime during a business day doesn't look favorable, of course.

Seems to be up and running now, as far as I can tell? At least, I was able to log in just fine at the .Mac website.

This note has been on the .Mac support page:
"Attention Back To My Mac users
In the coming weeks, we will be improving compatibility with home-based routers and various network environments. So if you find that you cannot access your remote Mac right away, please be patient as we work to improve the service. "
I haven't been able to use Back to my Mac at all in either direction to or from three different Macs behind routers. Not to say this has anything to do with today's outage, but I hope they fix it quick. It will be a really cool feature when they get it to work.

On another note... I'll bet they are selling a lot of .mac subscriptions and/or iLife '08 with Leopard having just come out. That could have something to do with it. Upgrades, etc.

speaking of .mac...anyone know how to get rid of the .mac menubar item in leopard?
I don't use .mac and hate having useless (to me) icons in the menubar.

To remove the .Mac menu item, go to .Mac in the System Preferences, then uncheck "Show status in menu bar."
Or, if you want it REALLY simple, you can remove any menu bar icon by command-dragging it out of the menu bar.

@ #13 Gene Cowan.
System preference was the first place I checked to get rid of the .mac menu bar item, and at least on my system it was definitely not there. I'll try your command drag tip though, thanks for the help!

back to my mac has been very intermittent for me. sometimes i can connect, sometimes i can't... sometimes my other computer doesn't even show up. i'm under the impression this is common and probably has a role in all of these .mac issues.

I was frustrated with not being able to get rid of the .mac menu bar item as well. I found out by holding the option+command key at the same time I could then drag the icon off of the menu bar.
