The update will come in the form of a new patch for the client (called Trinity), which will also feature new ingame ships, lots of new items, and updated graphics textures. I've only just recently gotten into EVE Online, but it's a good time for a space-based MMO-- really complex economy, harsh PvP, and excellent skill system. I know some Mac users have already been playing it with Boot Camp and Parallels, but it'll be nice to finally have a native Mac client.
The patch is supposed to drop next Tuesday, so the Mac client should be available on the site sometime soon after that. Get ready to head into low sec space on your Mac, but be careful-- the rats are out in force.

FYI: EVE runs great using Crossover too.

oh god, this is terrible news - I saw EVE Online once at a friend, and I was hooked within minutes. Only thing that kept me from subscribing and spending all of my time there was the requirement of Windows.
Please, please, let the Mac client be really, really bad! I can't afford to spend that much time with a game! :-(

Best news I've heard all day! I've been running EVE using Crossover Mac for a few weeks now, and I'm completely hooked! I can't wait to see what it looks like natively.

Oh, I just watched my free time vanish out the window. Perhaps I should chase it? ...Nah.

Just wanted to note so no one gets giddy:
"It is important to note that the Linux and Mac client use Cedega/Cider wrapper and won't run on older PPC Macs -- Intel or bust. Sorry guys, I was wanting to rock EVE Online on my Apple Performa with you."
So I guess i will keep playing WoW in my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0Ghz with 4gb of ram and my new 6800Ultra some more. I dont have plans to upgrade to an MacIntel, when my PowerMac G5 runs like new with Leopard @ 64bit...
I really wanted to play that game so, I will just wait till my machine really is in need of an upgrade.
Thanks to CCP! Not bad in doing a half/assed job...

I've got a couple of Mac buddies that I've kept pestering about EVE. Now they'll have the chance to experience EVE, the MMO that's like a sand box with land mines. Careful where you dock that ship!

Would it be risky to sign up for an account in anticipation of a mac client? Any caveats?

@ Mikal: On the site there are some great resources to help get started. The game has changed quite a bit over the past year that I've been playing, making it easier for new players to get a grasp on it. Also, join a corp early on — they'll help you out with money and fighting and stuff.
@Iomatic: Nah. You'll be able to use your username on either Mac or PC, or at least you should be. I played it on a friend's PC with my username and play now in boot camp on my Intel Mac — I can't wait til tomorrow.
Much better release news than Leopard — over here, at least.
