PC World pits Leopard against Vista

The gang at PCWorld magazine have sincerely accepted the premise that a Mac is really truly a personal computer, and as such deserves coverage in their fine industry publication. With a full and enthusiastic Leopard review (cribbed from sister mag Macworld), side-by-side Leopard & Vista feature comparison gallery (sure, Shadow Copy can back up your files, but can it give you motion sickness?) and editor Harry McCracken's 'tough love' 21 Quibbles with Leopard article, the full-court 10.5 press is definitely on. The "21 Quibbles" article is harsh as a butterfly kiss, starting out with McCracken noting that "[c]ompared to Windows Vista, Leopard is a meatier, more polished, more immediately useful, less annoying OS upgrade." Aww, Harry, we didn't know you cared!

My favorite PCWorld Mac-related comment is the brief note here in the Best Vista Laptops photo feature: apparently the fastest Vista laptop ever tested by PCWorld labs comes with another OS as a bonus. Apparently one of the advantages of not really caring if your laptop runs Vista is that it ends up running Vista really, really quickly.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

There are a lot of reasons why someone would switch. I myself was a PC user my whole like up until this July when I bought my MacBook. Using our PC has now become a pain, and I am happy I made the switch. To be honest I hated my PC even while I was using it. I wanted a way out and I found it.

Can you record TV with FrontRow?

My point is that the there are things in the Mac that are better and there are things in the PC that are better (yes, fanboys of both camps, it's true!) But if you're currently a PC person, I don't see why you'd want to switch since to a Mac since PCs are compatible with more software and the differences in the OS's aren't that great.

Why can't Microsoft get Vista to run as well on PCs as Erica was able to on the iPhone? It's a pretty sad state of affairs when the Apple iPhone is the best platform for running the latest version of Windows!

I've been using Leopard (did upgrade instead of brand new installation) for about a week now and I don't have any problems that other users seem to have. What impressed me most about Leopard is that even with upgraded graphics and added functionalities, the OS seem to be faster and smoother.

What I don't like about MS's products is that every time when they come up with a new system, I need to upgrade hardware and replace pretty much everything. It happened to me with Win ME to XP and XP to Vista. Sure OS is an important part of the computer experience, but I use my computer to run softwares and do work rather than to look at 'cool' visual effects and desktop backgrounds.

So Apple, who is both a hardware and software developer, should release it's OS for a market where almost no computers have the same specs, and in the process, creating an unnecessary amount of problems, like those that Windows Vista has/had?

If Microsoft made their own hardware, do you think they would do the same? I think, no, I know, that they would do the same.

None of my friends has the same computers, and cellphones like me. I am the only one with a MacBook, and the only one with a SonyEricsson w880i.

And I guess you are talking about that crappy Flip 3D that Vista have. Guess what? It's useless compared to Exposé, because, unlike Exposé, it only shows you one window at the time, then you have to flip more until you reach the correct window, whereas in Exposé, you get a quick overview of all windows, and can easily get to that window. Quick and easy.

And Vista? Stable? Pfft...

This is great! You know, 10 -15 years ago, I prayed for this day! The articles that used to appear in PC mag & the like were the total opposite of what I see now. It was tough to be hard core mac user back then and not constantly be ridiculed.

redemption!

I can't use some of the features in Leopard as they make me feel sick, seriously, Time Machine being the worst. Leopard is a real let down compared to a recent purchase of an HP Blackbird 002 with Vista Ultimate. I love Vista on my Blackbird 002 it's stable, fast, fast, fast and full of neat features that are also neat eye candy. Click on an icon and up comes all your open windows, no swoosh, puke effect just a clean action. Backing up your system can be done without a puke bag. Vista is easy to use.

I know bad, bad me for posting here. I do own Macs but I like variety and now frankly that's coming from PC crowd. Maybe Apple should let OSX run in the wild? Then we can all look alike.

It's easy just lie down and sleep. A world where everyone uses the same phone, the same computer, the same OS. Where are you going to run too, listen to me, where are you going to hide? The fact is there will be no PC users like you left anymore.... (apologies to Body Snatch movies)

Anyway guys be careful what you wish for. Soon adverts by Apple will be making fun of people for being different.

Maybe there's something I'm just not getting. I don't have Leopard yet, as I'm currently away from home and my mac.) But what's the big deal about Stacks? I had my Applications folder in the dock in Tiger, and it did exactly what I wanted it to do, open a scrollable menu with all the items in it, it sounds like Stacks don't do that, they open a fancy schmancy window which displays only the first 64 (or something) files? How is that better than how it used to be?
