But now that I know you're out there, I've got even more good news for you. The Mac client has been available to download for a little while now in beta, and it supposedly works great. Plaguelands got it running terrific on a pretty well-fitted MacBook Pro running Tiger. There have been rumors about Leopard not working well, but considering that CCP (the company that makes EVE) specifically mentioned Leopard in their announcement, it should run just as well.
And tomorrow's the day-- EVE players are getting both the new patch, and the new Mac and Linux clients. I'll see you all out there among the belts, mining asteroids and fending off rats.

So this actually looks pretty rad, but as an MMO, how much is it per month?

You can also just make money in-game to buy timecards.

6: No it wont run on PPC, which makes this a suck upgrade if you ask me. :( Im not buying a new Mac just to play games because developers are doing shit job upgrades to only mac intel machines and not ppc. My belief is, if Blizzard can do it, so can the rest... if not they suck.

So far, it's the opposite of fun. I can't login after having downloaded the Mac client, presumably the most recent. I get the following messages:
"There was an unexpected error while retrieving patch status:
A patch file for your build number is not available.
You will have to patch manually."
"Incompatible (Release)" 3.23.41536.
... where 3.23.41536 is the most recent version. Anyone else see this, and been able to get past it? Thx.

well, I'd rather have some titles ported (via cider) to Intel, than have NO titles developed from scratch for PPC and I don't have an intel mac... i'm waiting for woodcrest (?). why should the developers code for a platform that's essentially been end of lifed - every mac sold in the past 18 months is intel.
...and what titles are you referring to when you say "because developers are doing shit job upgrades to only mac intel machines and not ppc" - I'll be sure to avoid those.

Well a update on using a Macbook. Lots of crazy graphic problems. Screen flashes and major slowdowns. Have lowering the settings all the way down to no use.
Game works on a lot better on a Macbook with Crossover.

Downloaded the newest patch from their site today, and played for a couple hours. Works/looks awesome. And I'm glad to have the Windows partition gone.
But, seems like the server is down, most likely related to the patch and new Linux/Mac jumping on. I'm sure it'll be back in a few.

If you experience (like me) that the link is broken on the website, check this link;

Anyone know any guides or tips for a new player starting out? Looks cool, but intimidating.

Regarding the windowed mode, you can switch between fullscreen and windowed using Cmd-Enter (which works on nearly all Cider-based games).

mikal, it is super intimidating, but fans of the game say that's it's charm. Here's a good list of guides for beginners:
http://www.crazykinux.com/2007/10/10-sites-for-every-new-eve-online.html
But even with those resources, be prepared to be overwhelmed at first. Follow all the tutorials to the letter and take your time learning things.

I'm ecstatic to welcome fellow Mac users to EVE. It may be a harsh place to begin in, but once you know your way around, once you've given yourself enough time to move around, you'll enjoy the freedom.
As the saying goes, "EVE is like a sand box with land mines. Deal with it"
And with the list of sites on my blog, which Mike was kind enough to point to, you'll have the resources and knowledge to go out explore, and conquer your corner of the universe.
Fly safe!

My client's actually been crashing. It must be pretty rare, because no one else I talked to experienced this.
I'd get a Cider Runtime error and then the game would disconnect. It happened a lot at the beginning, but now it happens maybe once every few hours

I ran it on Leopard fine. I'm a little peeved there isn't window support, but hey, its one good beta. OH, I do have issues with my icons on my desktop refusing to move after I run the game.
Greg:
I use time codes and pay $40 for 3 months, so its really not that bad. if you pay CCP directly, you pay around $15 a month.

for those having trouble starting the game after installation. from what i heard the game doesnt seem to work when installed on a case sensitive partition. after al the game is just a cider/transgaming wrapped windows game. so give them some time to learn how to work with case sensitive file systems ;)
my MBP with tiger came without case sensitivity and it worked right away. (running leopard now with an upgrade installation).
