iChat 4 adds IRC-style actions
IRC fans rejoice. Leopard's iChat 4 introduces IRC-style /me actions. Just enter /me followed by an action and iChat will properly attribute that action to you in the chat window. The action appears outside the "bubbles" in a central text. iChat does not yet support /describe but /me is a great place to start and shows Apple's ever expanding attention to non-AIM standards and capabilities.
/me approves.

Really? Damn, that's pretty awesome. Now I REALLY wish I could afford a copy of Leopard, like right now.

/me worked in Jabber chats in Tiger, not in AIM.

Does it work if the person you're talking to isn't using iChat?

Agreed-- how does this display on the Windows version of AIM? (aka everyone else I know) Or even on Adium for that matter...

On Tiger, it appeared as "/me whatever" with a bubble. It displayed as shown in the screen shot only on Leopard.

I'm not entirely sure why this is useful. Is the idea that if I happen to type like a caveman — "Me hits monkey on head, drags back to cave, eats steaming flesh" — iChat will reformat my ramblings in proper grammatical English?
Isn't it easier just to, you know, type in English in the first place?

Jeff - it's more to make it like a story with some narration. It's just another way to play around with interacting. Instead of saying ::wink wink:: you can just "/me said that with a wink" which is then displayed "John said that with a wink" outside of the bubbles.
It's fine if you don't like it. Some of us find it fun and use it as a way to change up chats.

Would be cool if these /me messages were also sent as Twitter tweets.

This worked in Tiger, and has somewhat worked on Adium for quite a while. In Adium, if you type '/me is crying with laughter' it will send this message: *is crying with laughter*

When I use /me in iChat 4, it shows up correctly in my chat window but outputs the "/me" on an iChat 3 client on the other end.
