Apple releases Darwin 9.0, Unix foundation of Leopard
Back when the Intel Macs first appeared there was a delay from Apple in releasing Darwin 8, the open-source BSD/Unix foundation of Tiger. Crazy theories were adduced, and bad intentions attributed to Apple, but eventually Darwin 8 for Intel Macs was released. Apple seems to have moved even faster with OS X 10.5, and just a couple of weeks after the commercial release of Leopard, Darwin 9.0 is now available at Apple's Darwin page. So if you've ever wanted to root around in the source for the foundations of Leopard, here's your chance.[via Digg]

Not to be lame... but it's been up for a while. What I'm really waiting for is the binary installer for Darwin 9. I want to try it out on VMware or even be adventurous enough to install it on my MacBook Pro. They'll release the installer ISO soon enough... I hope.

According to darwin-dev@lists.apple.com, Apple have ceased producing binary releases of Darwin, so you'll be waiting a while for that one.
Beyond that, macosforge.org is as dead as the OpenDarwin project it aimed to replace, and portions of the Darwin 9 sources are missing (so you can't actually build it yet).

OK noon question here - does this mean I can run the system OS X is based on, like when I access the terminal - on any old PC? Because THAT would be sweet. Although I'm not 100% sure why.
