Apple posts new iTunes ad

If you've been watching TV during the last few days chances are you have already seen this: Apple has released a new iTunes commercial. The new commercial features Mary J. Blige singing 'Work That' out while those iconic silhouette dancers dance around with hip mounted iPods (not an iPhone in sight!).
What do you think about these iPod/iTunes ads? Still cool, or is it time for Apple to come up with something fresh? Sound off in the comments.

Silloettes were bad from the start. What ever happened to "1984" or "Lemmings" or even "Manuals"? The worst thing is that they added 3d effects. It's not even a silloette anymore!

The only other one I can think of off the top of my head from her recents is the Chevy magazine ads. She's in nearly a dozen in my fashion magazines! Her PR department must be working overtime! Personally--I really liked MJB growing up, her last album was all right...but it's sort of like RHCP for me--it's the same thing again and again and again...
Instead of just sparking agreements for cash, I'm betting that they could've got more attention for brandname and MONEY from R&B/HipHop-lovers with this old silhouette ad by using some current faves like Amy Winehouse, Common (w/ Lily Allen) or heck, even Beyonce!? Or Ciara? Or Keyshia Cole who people are absolutely nuts for??? Unfortunately, I think MJB was the one who struck the deal AND has a new single out? This song is bad though...
I love this ad!!! I just wish I knew where she got her HOT boots!!! If anyone knows or can find out, I beg you...please tell me!

I'm going to say this. IMO, the LAST TIME they used a good song was "dance tonight" by Paul McCartney. I'm no racist, but I just don't like rap. Okay?

November 28 2007 at 11:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLove the ad, but I don't think that apple has done a
good job of hitting the minority community. For obvious reasons, they probably don't want to feature a rapper with a gold grill in his mouth holding up an iphone/ipod. however, the fact remains that hip and r&b are currently the bestselling muscial art forms, almost universally. For example, my brother, who is in the music business, says that rap musicians are not making money off of black people. Asia is the largest market for hip-hop. I think that what happens is that companies shy away from black music because they are afraid that it will attract the "wrong kind of customer." So Mary J. Blige is a compromise--she is a safe foray into black culture, without really giving the people what they want. I love Mary J. but the song in this as is not one that I would pick. so for people who say that this song doesn't move them, I understand because it is not a song to move anyone. I am hoping that apple can see the benefit in stretching itself in future ads and perhaps becoming a little edgier.
I'm tired of the silhouette ads. I think the new iPod touch commercial was phenomenal. Maybe Apple should move more towards ads that feature the product and not the music and celebrities.

I don't know what everyone's complaining about. The ad is really well done, production values are high, and it appeals to a broad enough demographic.
I agree that the negative comments are coming from people who don't like the style of music (white or otherwise)...just as those who weren't into U2 or Feist didn't care much for those ads either. Mary J. is still very much relevant in many music circles.
But yeah, Apple needs a new marketing concept in '08. I think that'll come when their entire product line gets overhauled too (MacPro, MacBook, no more iPod Classic).
