NBC officially removed from the iTunes Store

Now that December has arrived and NBC's contract has expired, all of their content has been removed from the iTunes Store, as promised. That means no more Bravo, mun2, NBC, NBC News, CNBC, NBC Sports, Sci Fi, Sleuth, Telemundo or USA Network (Go ahead and look. We'll wait).

It looks like the two companies were unable to patch things up, not surprising considering their ugly, public fighting. Good luck to NBC with hulu and that wonderful NBC Direct service, which sounds great.

It requires Internet Explorer, the NBC Direct Player (Windows only) and the latest .Net framework. Videos are available for only 7 days after they initially air, and disappear from your computer 48 hours after you begin watching them (unless you remember to renew your license before then). Also, videos will only play on the computer used for the initial download.

Mac users cannot use the service, though NBC says a Mac version is "...planned for 2008." Finally, downloads cannot be transferred to portable devices.

Awesome.

NBC SUCKS!

NBC you guys are so stupid all the other networks constantly kick your butt. This is just another way to show your inferiority to the other networks. I love the office and now I can't but the newer episodes. I am so pissed NBC get off your ass and make up with itunes unless you like being a sucky network that makes fans of your shows pissed!

This sucks big time... Anyone out there know the secrete of getting Hulu to let you into their private beta? I added my email a while back in October and haven't heard a thing.

Hulu sucks. The PQ is terrible. The only thing it has going for it is that it is free. I don't mind watching the commercials imbedded but a non-portable version really is backwards thinking. I wish iTunes had free versions of shows with commercials imbedded for 2 weeks after a show airs and then charge $1.99 for the archived commercial free version. The revenue through advertising would more than pay for itself.

I just find it worthy of humorous contempt how very clueless the corporations are as to what people want from their digital media. Were corporations to provide legal BitTorrents of non-DRMed versions of their episodes, at a sensible price, they'd make a fortune. But since they are trying to force people's actual desires into the container of what they feel people should desire, their models are failing. And this is a particularly clear example of this stupidity.

I bought a season pass to Stargate Atlantis. Is it still on iTunes? I'm not in front of my own computer right now. Please check for me and leave a comment. I will watch for it. Thanks.

Yes it is Jim. STARGATE ATLANTIS is produced by MGM, which remains an iTunes content partner.

I don't have cable and I never watched NBC until they came to iTunes. The Office was kind of funny. I'm going to miss that show. I guess if I ever crave it again, I can always catch a torrent or watch it on YouTube.

I am a die-hard iTunes fan. This is why: Apple brought an easy and legit music store for my computer. They made it so easy to purchase the stuff that was so borderline tempting to P2P. $1-2 and my conscience was free, and I was guaranteed a top-quality recording. Then they brought TV shows. I don't have cable and I'll never get it. For my viewing habits, it costs less per month to rent movies online and to buy shows on iTunes than it costs me for cable... and I can take my shows wherever I go - they're mine to keep. I also wouldn't ever buy the entire season of anything on DVD.

If it's not on iTunes, I don't buy it. They have won my business and my loyalty (unless they really do something crazy that hurts my feelings of course).

I know that iTunes has traditionally brought in a decent amount of revenue, but from looking at their financial statements over the last few years, it hasn't proven to be a great net-income producer. iTunes is really an amazingly-successful service that Apple has provided that has basically helped to save the entertainment industry from online losses.

Good luck to NBC and whatever they're doing. I won't be onboard though. I figure that there are plenty of like-minded, online media purchasers out there. If you want to download some entertainment, you go to iTunes. If they don't have it, then you either say "oh well" or you head off to the torrents or YouTube like so many people have claimed they would probably choose to do.

Hmm, record on TiVo Series2 - Download files to Mac via Unix curl command - Convert TiVo format to MPEG2 -> Convert MPEG2 -> MPEG4 using VisualHub. Then xfer to iTunes.

Scripted the whole thing and it runs automagically overnight so my iTunes contains the latest episodes from NBC shows. Then all I have to do is Sync my iPhone before I leave in the morning.

Watching NBC shows on the train ride to work....

This was not simple and easy like the iTunes store and it takes HOURS to convert the files. But it works for me. I would gladly pay Apple to get the shows via the iTunes store but have implemented this workaround to accomplish the same goal.

I also edit out the commercials w/iMovie and string the shows together and burn them to a DVD using iDVD as well. I end up with less discs then a season release on commercial DVD. It only costs me time. Now for a faster Mac Pro to do it at blazing speed!
