An exhaustive exploration of Netnewswire

Blogger Shawn Blanc has written an exhaustively thorough review of NewNewsWire (We interviewed Brent Simmons, author of NetNewsWire, over the summer). He begins with a description of how he first became aware of the application and goes on to describe a history of the UI, his "favorite things" about NNW and concludes with an exploration of the paid version.

Note that Shawn intends to give other popular applications, like Coda, SuperDuper! and Transmit, the same treatment. We can't wait.

I like NNW, but the main reason I stopped using it for Endo is that it lacks a true offline mode, with a cache of all the article HTML and content data (with images).
I'm pretty sure it's not so hard to do (and I'm a programmer) - it may be a matter of days - so I don't understand why they don't do it. It would be the first one to offer a proper offline mode, and therefore the better RSS reader, period !

One deficiency of NNW is that it cannot open PDF attachments and simply downloads them. It has a sync feature with NewsGator or .Mac, but otherwise is inferior to Vienna, which does use the PDF services of Mac OS X to open PDFs in a new tab. I own the full $30 version, but it was a waste of money.

I did not read the review yet, so I won't judge the quality of it. I'm always a bit surprised by the number of people not using Vienna (it's worth mentioning that the last version is better than it used to). Anyway. Let's read the review and see if it can change my mind.

The absolute biggest reason I use google reader is the mobile client. I can't justify paying another $30 just to read the feeds on my blackberry.

Ryan, you can use m.newsgator.com if you want to read your feeds on your blackberry. You obviously don't mind reading in a browser.

Also, I've found that Newsgator Go! works without paying, but it has that annoying pop up that says it's not a paid for version.

The one thing I wish NNW had was an easy way to filter feeds. I wish there were a filter search box at the bottom of the feed list in the sidebar that would instantly filter the list to just those feeds that matched the filter. Then it would truly be perfect.
