Remember Marian, the guy who's building a preamped mic mike for the iPod touch? Today he writes that touch hacker eok has ported Samuel's SvSIP to the iPod. SvSIP uses the SIP protocol to connect to other participants and to allow you to talk over WiFi. I tried porting SIP myself and didn't get very far.
Marian writes that eok has been able to both send and receive calls and promises screen shots as soon as possible.

Not for iPhone?

Sounds awesome! This is one of two things that I want to make the iPod Touch a hugely attractive piece of hardware. This would also be enough reason to finally get a skype account. Of course skype on the iPod Touch is at least months away, but this is a start.
The other thing I really hope they add is Bluetooth with A2DP.
I want this so badly because I can't stand cell phone companies and would happily sacrifice phonability when not near wifi, hence why I don't want an iPhone.

I could not believe when I discovered that the iPod touch does not have A2DP, in fact does not have Bluetooth. I wondered why, so I went to double-check the specs on the iPhone and discovered that also does not have A2DP. It's a MUSIC PLAYER and a PHONE. What more obvious technology could it be lacking? I'd even put that above video and cut-and-paste on the "WTF were they thinking?!" list.
They really need this feature on both devices immediately. They could also make a bundle manufacturing an Apple-branded A2DP headset for like $200, cause you know it could be ridiculously priced and tons of people would still buy it because it would work and look better than anything else out there (which is not saying much in that market right now).

I'm fine with my iPhone paying $50/month for reliable service anywhere I go..
Do any of you work at a real job to where you need reliable phone service? Seriously, enough fucking around with this VOIP shit to save a few bucks

Douchebag. VoIP is useful for many people. Don't criticize others for investing their own time in the way they choose.

Perhaps someone works at a real job with a VoIP phone system. Ever think of that?
And by your math $50 * 24 month contract = $1,200. Your obviously a little better set than I to call that 'a few bucks'.

VOIP is incredibly useful to many people for both unlimited local and long-distance calling when in a hotspot. Especially for students who live on school campuses which are bathed in wifi, a protable VOIP device is actually much better than a cell phone. I have a skype account and only pay ~$30 a year for unlimited local and long distance calling to any phone in Canada or the US. This makes it very convenient to keep in touch with family scattered around the country without having to pay huge long-distance fees. Also, VOIP is already possible on the iPhone in the form of the skype internet portal. Granted it's an internet app and I don't think it plays well with your iPhone contacts (having never tried it I have no idea) but it's still a completely workable Voip solution. The goal here is to solve the hardware limitations of the touch and to use an open protocal, to save money and generally make it more accessible.
Don't post to give people shit for doing something that thousands of people want, you just look like an ass

Think about it: how much would it cost to make an international call with your regular cell phone service?

"Mike" is a common shortening of microphone. I know it doesn't make sense, but...

Ryan,
Not many people have access to WiFi everywhere they go.. It's not a reliable solution at this point.
$600/year is a very, very, very small price to pay for around the clock, reliable phone service so I can run my business.
This hacking nonsense is ridiculous. Just buy a cellphone and a phone contract and be done with it.

James3 you REALLY are thick-headed aren't you?
who the hell is talking about cell phones, the article refers to the IPOD TOUCH.
The point being: making calls from an MP3 PLAYER- NOT A CELL PHONE.

James3 -
You may want to consider the fact that NOT EVERYONE THINKS JUST LIKE YOU and NOT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME NEEDS AS YOU. I admit VOIP on a Touch sounds foolish for someone running a business, but most folks didn't mention anything about a business. What if you are student who uses the campus wireless to call home once a week? What sense does a $50 a month cell phone contract make then? I'd rather have that money for beer.
And don't forget there are those of us out here who have it as sort of a hobby to see what we can get computers to do. And by "those of us out here" I mean just about everyone reading these comments(that's why we are HERE, in a MODDING FORUM). It's like the old saying about why people climb mountains - because they are THERE. So people want to figure out how to do VOIP because it is THERE. Even if they don't use it much, they'll enjoy figuring out how to do it & learn a few useful computer skills along the way. So relax and stop being so critical of folks who are enjoying their hobby.

So James, you obviously work as a professional douche nozzle. What is wrong with someone trying to get the most out of a device? I'm not trying to flame, but trolls piss me off. I'm guessing the last thing that you hacked was your balls to get a business loan to better sell used cars or AmWay or something. Point is, the spirit of ingenuity and invention is what this country is based on, I only hope, that if you are a resident, you'll be moving abroad soon.

Yeah so uhh. I'm either at: work, school, home. All of which have good wifi. Why would I: a) pay $50/mo for service, b) deal with contracts, c) deal with evil phone companies, when I can just have something free and does what I need it to?
I'm sure my terrible history with Bell Canada has left me jaded about phone companies, but as a co-op student, every penny I make means a lot and saving $50/month is a lot of money to me.

good news on the VoIP, giving an ipod phone qualities is a great addition. I might get one myself seeing as how i have wifi everywhere i go but my car.
