Safari 3 AdBlock

I know some folks have been looking for an AdBlock plugin for Safari that works with Leopard's Safari v3. The excellent Pith Helmet ($10) is now Leopard compatible, but the relatively new Safari AdBlock is open source and free. It's pretty much install and forget. The most recent version also includes initial support for AdBlock Plus style lists as well.

Safari AdBlock is a free download from sourceforge and is Leopard-only.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

@sean_hussey:

"A few milliseconds here or there is negligible compared to the restart time of Safari with saved tabs."

All these comments and no one's mentioned the best Safari add-on yet? SAFT. It blocks ads, and also does so much more. Try it for a day, and you'll soon see why I think it's indispensable. Works on Tiger and Leopard.

Gee, Stirling. Someone who writes about journalism ethics should know the difference between "there" and "their."

I pay less attention to poorly proofread comments.

I don't block all ads. Text and image ads are no skin off my back. But it's the poorly written Flash ads that peak my CPU usage and drain my battery that chap my hide.

Safari Stand does an excellent job of making all Flash content load only when you want it to ("manually load plug-ins"). It's been wonderful!

n8: Check the "Safari" menu - there should be an option to right-click Flash.

Max beat me to it, those are the exact steps I used. Typo in the first line, though:

Install it into /Library/InputManagers/

(No space between Input and Managers)

And you may have to create that directory first.

Enjoy!

SafariBlock is far superior to this, since you get to make the list. You can choose to only block the most annoying ads, instead of wholesale blocking. Also provides an excellent right-click to block, even on Flash ads.

And, as mentioned on Macupdate:

"Install it into /Library/Input Managers/

Then issue the following from Terminal:

sudo chown -R root:admin /Library/InputManagers

sudo chmod -R go-w /Library/InputManagers

After that, it works perfectly!"
