Freeverse releases a Horde of Orcs on the Mac

The demo is available for download over on their website (along with a freaky live action trailer that means someone had to get dressed up in green paint and go Orc-crazy). Just the other day, I said I hadn't had a Mac-only gaming experience worth recommending this year, but maybe I spoke too soon. Horde of Orcs might be just the thing to finish off 2007 right.

If this is the state of future Mac gaming, then I weep for the future. What's up with the graphics? The game looks like it's 10 years old.

This is pretty cool, but $25? Come on.

tower defense was the best reason to play warcraft 3 online imho... so if this was free-er i'd be all over it :D

I downloaded the demo and started playing. 15 minutes later, I was buying it-- especially since it's on MacSantaDeals.com today (12/12/2007) with 20% off.

Interesting, the game is called "When Orcs Attack" on the online version of the game: http://www.mrjoy.com/games/webplayer/6 (requires a plugin). It's also available for windows, so I guess you still haven't had a Mac only experience.

To be fair, we developed the game on the Mac for the Mac. The windows version is a side effect of Unity supporting Windows builds. We worked very close with Mr. Joy to build this version.
We also considered all Macs with this game, so you will find it runs on the Mac Minis and MacBooks, you have to trade graphic complexity for accessibility.

$25?? Are you kidding me? This game is worth $5-10. It's basically just a port of a flash game that looks like it is running in the quake 2 engine.
I wouldn't be surprised if freeverse paid for this post.

Well, "Annon," I can tell you for sure that Freeverse didn't pay for this post, and I recommended the demo, not the game. The demo plays pretty slowly on my old Powerbook, and so I can't actually recommend the game until I've tried it on something a little faster. And if you want to play a TD game for free, I made sure to link one in the post above as well.

So in the post, you make everything sound rosy and hint that you think it could be the best mac-only game this year. In reality, you only played the demo, and it ran terribly on your powerbook, even though it had quake 2 level graphics.
I played the demo on a powerbook as well. A 1.67GHz G4 with 1GB ram and a 128MB ATI mobility 9700. For a game so graphically simple, it should tear through this. Instead, I had to reduce the settings to minimum to get a respectable framerate. The gameplay was fun, but not any more fun than similar flash versions of the game. If the game had a decent graphics engine, I would consider paying $5-10 for the game. $25 is an insult.
I'm tired of you guys paying lip service to every single app that sends a link to you. More and more posts here read like ads. There isn't any journalism to your posts. You are rarely critical of anything. There's nothing wrong with posting links, but tell us what you really think instead of just trying to sell software for others.

i love it when people talk tough and think they are the sh!t under names like "Annon". it makes them sound so legit and credible. not to mention ultra-cool.

Glad you think I'm ultra-cool sam! Maybe we can hang out some time.

I think this is an interesting game with two major flaws. The first is the price, which is IMHO too high for any casual game, let alone one that has a 100 other versions online for free. Second, I have to agree that the graphics are a bit underwhelming for 2007. If the price were lower, perhaps I could let that slide somewhat.

I enjoyed it and bought it. Of course, I'm a DTD addict, but I think the game looks and runs quite nicely on my 24" Al iMac. I, for one, do recommend it, thought I agree that it would probably be better priced at $15 than $25.

I'm surprised so many are surpriosed at the price. Freeverse is known for overpricing their apps.
And if anyone from Freeverse is still reading this thread; I'm still ticked off at the Sound Studio price jump. It's a great app (not that you guys programmed it), but worth half what you're charging. It went from $35 to $80, and all you did was change the "2" to a "3" at the end of the title.
Weak.

I know man, Apple just changed 10.4 to 10.5 and charged everyone!
If you really do honestly think that's all we did to Sound Studio 3, I'll never be able to convince you of the entire re-write we did on the application, the countless free updates and additions to the program after it's launch.
Not to mention that anyone who bought Sound Studio 2 (not from Freeverse mind you) could get a 50% off upgrade to SS3, and people who got the FREE Bundle (meaning they didn't pay a dime for it) on their Macs could also get a discount upgrading to the new version.
So yeah, it was a lot of work changing the version string from 2 to 3.
And if you don't like a fully 3D TD game with hidden easter eggs and the committed support we give all our titles, then go and play a flash game, we are not stopping you. We are very proud of Hordes of Orcs and we think gamers will enjoy it a lot.

You're right. You probably won't convince me about the "entire rewrite." I've used both and there is little difference from where I sit. UI is practically the same. Speed seems the same. Some of the filters appear to be redesigned. Maybe I'm just not enough of a power user to see all the changes.
As for updates and additions, I'm not sure why anyone should pay for those in the first place, but that seems to be Freeverse's mindset. Instead of free stuff after purchase and upgrade schemes and such, why not just price the app fairly? Perhaps $35 was too low. I could see $50. But $80 is ridiculous. That's where I stick with Audacity - which does much more, just in a clumsier way.
I like this program (which I found too late to purchase at version 2). I want to be a customer, and I could afford your app, it's just a matter of principle. It's not worth $80, and your company comes off as greedy and myopic.

I opened it started playing for about 3 minutes, paused it and when I came back from lunch my trial had expired.
Maybe limit the levels or something but 60 minutes?
