Poll: How will the CompUSA closings affect you as an Apple user
Loyal TUAW reader Mike Schleifstein wrote in on our tip line with a thoughtful commentary about the CompUSA closings. Losing CompUSA means losing local Apple Certified Repair centers for a large segment of the United States without access to Apple Stores. More, without the brick and mortar CompUSA stores, many potential customers will not be to try out Apple products in person or buy Mac software at a real store. We decided to ask you, our readership, how the CompUSA closings will affect you. Here's an Amazon Unspun poll that you can expand and add your own feedback to. I'm curious to see how these closings will affect the TUAW community as a whole.

I used to live in Harrisburg, PA where there was no Apple Store and no CompUSA. The nearest Apple Store was in King of Prussia (near Philadelphia)! Now I'm in Pittsburgh where we thankfully have an Apple Store and a recently-closed CompUSA.
I don't really see the closing of CompUSA as having a big impact on Mac users. What with BestBuy now selling Apple products (even if their support is not as good) and personally, I still prefer to just go to Apple's website!
No effect. I banned their high priced, bait and switch, unknowledgeable asses years ago. Sometimes I would walk into one to physical mass around with hardware that I was thinking about buying from another retailer online.

Best Buy is no better, and even worse, when it comes to Apple support...history shows that! Plus they don't carry any Apple products in our area at this date (other than iPods).
CompUSA will be missed until Apple gets their heads out of the a$$es with thinking 2 out of 3 Apple Store customers live in New York or California!
I've been to several CompUSA locations over the years, in different parts of the country, and I've always been completely underwhelmed by their service and overall knowledge of things Macintosh.
That said, I currently live 30 minutes from an Apple Store, so I already have a better option.

Sure.
How about a little research before you spew out this crap? My CompUSA (which is sadly good again after a long period of suckage) has been an Apple authorized retailer for as long as I can remember. In fact, it's bean around selling Apple merchandise for a lot longer than any other Apple store (Official Apple stores included since those didn't show up here until two-three years back).
As it goes down, I hope I'll be able to squeeze out a Mac Mini or a ACD...
The CompUSA here in Greenville, SC was ranked #3 in the entire company. They sold 197 copies of Leopard in two days. There's one million people here in the upstate, yet there is no Apple Store anywhere in South Carolina. Aaargh!
December 14 2007 at 9:06 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyRight there with you Galley...I live in Greenville and that's my issue w/ this whole matter. To add insult to injury, Apple Store online charges us sales tax because they have a retail presence in the state; otherwise, like everyone else, they couldn't.
Oh, really Apple...where exactly is that retail operation?!

We do not have one here. But we have a small dog 45 minutes away! Its better then driving 3 hours to the nearest one...
We also have a few local repair people... but for some reason there sooooo mean... very unapple like. So I normally take matters into my own hands.
The CompUSA in my town was part of the first round of closures. I used to love them actually. The had an actual Apple employee sales guy on site.
But since they closed, I'm pretty sure that same guy went to staff the Apple section at the local Best Buy store. So no loss there.
And best yet sometime next fall, I hear our mall (Roseville Galleria) is getting an Apple Retail store. So yay!!! :)
