Talkcast #18, tis the season for giving
Sunday night's show featured Mat Lu as our capable host and panelists Mike Schramm, Christina Warren & yours truly discussing the state of the subnotebook rumors, Apple's finances and of course our choices for holiday gift giving. You can download the show directly, pick it up in our RSS or iTunes feeds, or stream it direct from Talkshoe. Music for this week's show by Brian McRae, courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network. As noted last week, if you're reading the feed in Mail.app under Leopard, you may see a pause while the enclosure is downloaded. Unfortunately this seems to happen with any RSS enclosures and there's not much we can do about it right now -- sorry!
We'll be back Sunday night at 10 for our regular weekly show, but please take note: I'll be cohosting the Typical Mac User podcast with Victor Cajiao at 8 pm ET, then scooting over to TUAW for the night shift. Please join us for both!

Hi Peter --
Unfortunately, this is the way our podcasts get handled -- since the Podcasts feed is a subset of the main feed, I don't have a way to enclose the podcast separately from the post. For what it's worth, this is the way we have been doing the podcasts all along; the problem is in Mail.app's handling of RSS enclosures, and it affects any site with them (not just us).
We are continuing to discuss this issue internally and I hope to get some better answers for you soon.

Yes, please figure this out. If you can't figure it out, I'm going to have to unsubscribe from your feed. It's hellishly annoying and at times crippling, and no matter who is at fault, it'll be your blog that loses readers.

bshi -- I assume you're also using Mail.app as your feedreader. Mac OS X 10.5.1?
If you have a second to try an alternative reader (Vienna, Google Reader, NetNewsWire etc.) and see if you have the same problem, that would be helpful.

You're assuming correctly.
To help out I tried NetNewsWire, which doesn't download the 20MB enclosure, but instead adds a dialog underneath the item with options to download - obviously a better solution. The problem is, I'd rather not have one more app that I have to utilize to browse RSS feeds - and in addition, have to shell out more money to do so.
I agree with you that Mail.app has a way to go before it handles RSS feeds with agility - this example, along with some others I have experienced (which actually involve NOT downloading content properly) are proof enough. However, for some of us, it's not worth adding yet another app to handle the few RSS feeds we follow.
For me, it will mean following TUAW weekly instead of daily, or at least in the short term, trying to delete the feeds that involve your talkcasts before I click on them, until there's another solution.

OK, I'll keep you informed. For what it's worth we only post one podcast a week, under normal circumstances -- I expect that we'll probably have several/week leading up to and during Macworld.

I'd also suggest an 'appless' solution of Google Reader, which is (IMHO) the best browser-based feed reader right now.
