NYT: 'More than one studio to offer iRentals at Macworld'
Whilst the blogosphere is known for its seemingly endless attempts at Apple rumour one-upping, the New York Times has joined the fray, not only re-iterating the Financial Times' earlier statement that Twentieth Century Fox will be on-stage for the Stevenote but also adding "more than one studio [will] appear onstage at the company's Macworld exhibition .... to endorse a new Apple movie rental service."When the news broke of Fox being first to sign up to iTunes movie rentals, we're certain that more than a few folks were surprised at the news: if only because it wasn't Disney (and of course Pixar) who were leading the Apple movie bandwagon forward again.

I think the rentals will be a big announcement at MacWorld next month. After burning up some gas and braving the cold to go rent some movies from my local HV I can't wait.
December 29 2007 at 7:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply@Kento Ito - using your same logic, the iPhone, which is not a Mac, and is not a Mac-only-compatible product, the iPhone would not have been announced at MacWorld last year. Not only was the iPhone announced at MacWorld, but wasn't the AppleTV (also a non-Mac-only device)?
Jobs' said in his keynote last year that Apple was no longer a computer company, and changed the name from Apple Computers, Inc, to Apple, Inc.
MacWorld is the largest event for Apple to make announcements related to any of its products, and competes with CES for the media's attention. To write off the possibility of iPhone, iTunes, or any other APPLE related announcements is denying reality...
You know, now come to think of it, movie rental deal announcement means one thing: Apple will announce the new Apple TV at Macworld, probably with even bigger hard disk space to hold movies that individuals downloaded from iTunes.
January 01 2008 at 11:55 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, given Jobs' connection to all things Disney, Disney and Pixar movies would seem a no-brainer to be the first movies offered for rental via iTunes, wouldn't they?
You know, my prediction is that there will be no rental announcement at Macworld, since Macworld is dedicated to Macs, not iTunes.
I think rental announcement will be announced probably in Febuary, when Apple usually releases minor update to iPods and iTunes, and etc.
Also, I think movie rental might not happen, but if they were to announce something that relates to movie, I think Apple might just add Warner Brothers and maybe other studio to the iTunes store for people to buy, but also they might lower the price to really compete, and maybe the option to burn to DVD, and possibility of HD version of the movie at higher price (to compete with BOTH Blu-Ray and HD-DVD)
Can't wait!
