MacHeist 2 bundle will include Pixelmator

As the MacHeist 2 software scavenger hunt winds down this weekend, the release of the MH software bundle for full-fare paying customers is just around the corner. TUAW has learned that the contents of the bundle will be announced next week on January 9th, and pricing will be the same as last year ($49). As usual, MacHeist donates 25% of the purchase prices of the bundles to charity.

What exactly is going to be in that package of code-y goodness? Well, the precise mix of apps is still under wraps; what we know right now is that there will be 10 or more products represented, with "some major names" among them. One thing that we are told will definitely be in the bundle is Pixelmator, so you'll be looking at a bargain on the basis of one $59 app by itself.

I already paid for Pixelmator a couple months ago when it was released after getting beta access from last summer's MacUpdate/MacHeist promo. It's pretty nice. Hopefully the MH II bundle will have some stuff that I need. From last year's bundle I use Delicious Library and DEVONthink all the time (although I've since upgraded to DEVONthink Pro).

Count me in with Pixelmator now included! Very cool. I was going to buy it in the next few days but now I'll wait and get a great deal with extras. I agree with those above, Adobe IS the Microsoft of design. Such a shame. I'm just happy those clever guys at Pixelmator came along.

I really like Pixelmator, but there it uses Apple's Core Image for just about everything (which is why its supposed to be so fast). The problem is that in Leopard Core Image has an absolutely horrible memory leak that makes Pixelmator almost unusable even for editing small jpegs on my MBP 2.2 with 2GB of RAM. I find myself using the GIMP (or Seashore for simple tasks) even though its bloated and has to run in X11.

Still, once Apple fixes the problem (they acknowledge it and say they are working on it) Pixelmator should go back to being a great tool. Back on Tiger I thought it was worth every dollar I paid for it.

Delicious Library 2 will not be part of the bundle. MacHeist has repeatedly stated that there will be no bundle repeats from previous MacHeists or from the MUPromo bundles either.

Besides which, despite Shipley's assurances that DL2 would ship when Leopard did we've yet to see more than snips and scraps of the beastie. Personally I'm not convinced DL2 exists.

As for the MHII bundle, I really don't care. I've already bought and paid for most of the software I actually need, and I'm not in the financial position to spend money on software I *don't* need, so I'll probably pass on the bundle.

If you want pixelmator then just buy it and give the developers all the cash

The new Photoshop Elements version will be native for Intel processors, and is due out soon (Jan 2008 or so).

Try shooting RAW and using Pixelmator. Pixelmator is crap for serious photographers. It is great for your home point and shooter. You will hit a brick wall soon if you get serious about your photography and use Pixelmator.

Well I don't know about you, but my camera includes all of the processing software (including the manufacturer's own RAW "developer") I need for photos. I want Pixelmator not for retouching, but for layering and blending. It promises to be a pretty easy way to do lightvector paintings, for example.

Jonny, you said serious photographers. I'd imagine people like that are using CS 3, Lightroom/Aperture, etc. not Pixelmator/Elements.

Pros use pro software.

Is the software in this bundle upgradable?

MacHeist 2 won't fail. While I don't like the attitudes and smugness of many of those involved in the MacHeist/MDA etc. promotions, there is no denying that they have the support of a lot of developers and they sell a lot of shareware. It's up to the devs, not us, to ensure they get a good deal and if there's at least two or three apps in the bundle that you really want then there's no denying you get a good deal too. I've chosen not to buy any of the bundles so far, but I'll be very keen to see what's in this latest one. And there's no denying that these promos have encouraged me to buy more Mac shareware.

"Just purchase Photoshop Elements people, it does a lot more for nearly the same price."

Too bad there's no Universal Binary. No thanks. Besides, I'd rather support some fresh new faces when I can. Adobe has become the Microsoft of graphics design - a lumbering, unresponsive giant who is now treating Mac users as second-class citizens. Bleh.

I've been wanting Pixelmator for a long time, but couldn't justify the admittedly-reasonable $59 for the little use I really have for an image editor. But with a bundle? Count me in!
