Growl Update

Lots of readers have written in asking about the status of Growl, the very popular global notification program that we have covered in the past. For the last three or four days, the Growl website has been down, as has access to the SVN. Because both MacUpdate and Versiontracker direct their download link directly to the Growl servers, users attempting to download the application have been out of luck. What's going on?

Perusing the Google Groups set-up for the program, the developers report that because their old server was retired and taken down, they are in the process of setting up new hosting and getting the site and the SVN back online. Earlier this morning, lead developer for the project posted a message to the Cocoaforge Growl forum indicating that he should have time to start working on the process tonight. Please note, that does not mean Growl will be back up and running tonight - just that the process may start-up. Setting up new hosting and transferring the SVN over can be a tedious process, so I suggest users just remain patient - I'm sure the developers will be back up and running as soon as possible.

If anyone absolutely has to have Growl now, I believe that Adium 1.2 comes with it as part of the installer (if so enabled). For information on the status of the site, I recommend checking out the Google Group and Cocoaforge forum for updates.

So wait, was the server yanked from under them?

Or did they just kind of retire it out of no where themselves?

If it's the later, why is no one complaining about the lack of professionalism?

John. You can't be serious. The developer builds a fantastic application, doesn't charge for it...literally giving it away for free, and your saying that it is unprofessional for him to take his site down while he replaces the server?

What planet are you from? Where exactly do you think he gets his money from?

I'm kinda broke right now (student), but I'd love donate time to the project if it helps!

Just wanted to say thanks for making growl such an awesome little app. I couldn't imagine life without it! :)

How is this a lack of professionalism? I don't have an internet connection at my apartment in order to fix it...

I sent Chris (the developer) a note to offer him a server in our cage at macminicolo.net, but he let me know that they've taken care of the hosting and it's just a matter of getting the site up again.

In the same conversation, he let me know how much has been donated to the Growl team in all the time that they've been developing this application. Though I won't share it for respect to privacy, it was surprisingly low. This certainly isn't a reflection of the incredible project or the great developers.

When the site comes back online, I suggest everyone show some gratitude for this application that we like so much.

Just a thought.

The title is misleading. Since Growl is an application with regular updates I immediately we to System Preferences to update the program after seeing the title in my RSS reader. "An update on Growl" or "Growl website (update)" would be a little more clear.

I did the same. Please, TUAW, think of the updaters.

My college is probably going to hate me for killing their bandwidth, but I had the disk image saved on my computer and put it on my web space. Here's a direct link:

Glad to know it's not just me who can't get it.

By the way: "For the last three or four, the Growl website has been down, as has access to the SVN."

... "three or four" what?
