Nullriver releases MediaLink for PS3

I know many of you out there are Xbox 360 owners who use Nullriver's Connect360 to stream audio and video from your Macs to your 360. Now Nullriver has stepped up to the plate for PS3 owners as well with MediaLink. It basically has the same functionality as Connect360 allowing you to stream audio and video from iTunes as well as pictures from iPhoto directly from your Mac to your PS3. The developer says that it supports non-DRM content in all of the following formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264, AVI, WMV & ASF, DIVX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, BMP including high-definition video.

MediaLink is $20 and a demo is available from Nullriver.

Update: I've now had a chance to play around a bit with this software and I have to say it seems somewhat buggy, crashing repeatedly on my iMac. That said, when it works it makes streaming a cinch. Nullriver also posted a note on their site that says "AAC support is coming soon."

Just one thing. I decided to buy the product a couple of days ago. The ability to play my iTunes files is a very good plus. After two days and a couple of e-mail to the support I still have to reiceve the activation code. PayPal notified the payment in less than a minute. Since I did not receive any e-mail reply from NullRiver, apart from an automatic message, I am getting very pist off. Than they wonder why Serial Box is so popular.

I am having the exact same problem. I've emailed them a few times and have gotten no answer.

I'm just curious if you got the activation code after?

Yes, I eventually received the activation code on Monday evening. I bought the product on Wednesday. I sent another e-mail from a different e-mail address, just in case.

Just one technical thing. The product is great, it really does its job. Fast and reliable. But I do have a problem with the udp multicast. Often the PS3 doesn't recognize it, or worse it loses the connection to the mediaserver. It seems that it binds the port to the wrong interface (the one of Parallels or the one of the PPP modem). I solved the issue issuing this command from the terminal:

sudo route add 239.255.255.250 192.168.2.1

where 192.168.2.1 is the IP address of my en0 interface connected to the PS3. Just restart medialink and all connection problems will disappear until your next OSX reboot.

I have the PS3 and Mac book Pro Version 10.4.1.

I tried the Nullriver trial version, but could never get my PS3 to see my mac. It mentioned something about the right ports being free. How do I check this, and should my PS3 be able to see my mac without the port being free?

Well, the streaming works fine. MP3, AAC, AVI, DiVX... as far as I tried I had no problems with compression formats (at least the one recognized by PS3). BUT!

Is it just me, or the sound gets pretty (too much) metallic?? I have a Dolby Surround system and the quality doesn't sound good to me.

For those wondering about discounts for Medialink, take my advice.

I also had Connect360, but no longer use it as I sold my XBOX360. I've since replaced it with a PS3.

I simply emailed Nullriver Support with a request to transfer my activation code, explaining my situation and they did so for FREE.

OK... So after 2 days of going back and forth with support it finally works perfectly.... I use handbrake to rip and qt to convert to M4V as MP4 files seem to be unsupported... Nullriver was absolutely awesome in working with me reviewing crashlogs and getting this setup for me.. They went from 1.0 to 1.01 to 1.1 in 3 days... Amazing customer support..

Also if your running Apple Airport N router make sure to change the max for multicast to 11MB/S otherwise your HOSED!!!

I can't get this to work. Keep getting the Ports 9385 and/or 9386 are in use error. And I don't know how to find out which apps are using those ports. I closed every app I thought I was using. Still won't work. Also tried disabling the NAT translation in Airport Extreme, as the FAQ suggested. Still nothing. Any kindhearted soul willing to help? I don't mind if you laugh at me and call me awful names. Thanks.

Has anyone figured out how to use this to copy media wirelessly? Maybe it's just that I'm using the demo, but the "copy" command under the options menu is disabled/grayed out.

Am I missing something? EyeConnect and Twonkyvision basically set up a UPnP media server, ie, providing access to your media content by making it visible on your network for the PS3. Codec and file support are the burden of the PS3 - that's why the recent firmware update made all of my .avi files work.

So what does MediaLink do differently? Why is codec support suddenly the host software's responsibility - shouldn't it just be providing a way to make the media accessible via the PS3?

Just curious - I'll give it a whirl.
