Ask TUAW: MacBook Pro sleep problems, multiple Firefoxes, Christmas music and more
In this edition of Ask TUAW we'll tackle MacBook Pro problems, running multiple versions of a program, hiding Christmas music in iTunes, making audiobooks, and more.As always your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. And now, to the questions!
Shawn asks:
I have a 15" 2.2 ghz macbook pro and was wondering if it might be defective. The problem is a wake-from-sleep issue. When I close the lid (that's usually how I put it to sleep), and open the computer, the screen responds fine. For periods greater than 20 or so minutes however, the screen is blank, and the system is unresponsive. This forces me to restart the computer, or wait about 5 minutes, after which the screen turns on but the mouse is a bit buggy.
I would first suggest resetting the System Management Controller, as that is the chip in the MacBook Pro which controls power management. If that doesn't do it, you may need to take it in to an Apple Store.
Patrick asks:
okay, so since the latest and greatest software update, my MBP's internal keyboard and trackpad stop working after i put my computer to sleep. now if it sleeps, i have to either hard boot or plug in a usb mouse to shut down. help please!!!!
Have you installed the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1? This was supposed to fix this problem. If that doesn't work I've seen it suggested that repairing permissions may help. You might even try the tip above about the System Management Controller, but if all else fails I'd take it in to an Apple Store.
JonB asks:
I'm currently enjoying using the new firefox 3 beta with the new beta mac theme (Proto). However, one of my favourite firefox extensions, firebug, hasn't been updated to work with the firefox 3 beta. Is there any way to run Firefox 2 alongside the Firefox 3 beta, so I can still use firebug when I need it?
The problem with trying to run both at the same time is that they will attempt to read and write to the same preference files, etc. However, I think you can probably get around this using rooSwitch ($14.95) which will create a separate profile for each one. That way you can keep them separate. You will not be able to run them at the same time, but you should be able to easily switch back and forth.
Jeff asks:
Now that Christmas is over, what should I do with my Christmas music? I don't want my christmas music showing up in my iTunes Music folder when its not Christmas, but I also don't want to have to re-rip it next year. What should I do with it all?
Several readers have suggested various solutions. One thing you could do is create a separate iTunes library to keep the Christmas music in. You can do this simply by holding down the option key while launching iTunes.
Personally, I think a better option would be just to create a Smart Playlist without the Christmas music in it, then use that Smart Playlist as the foundation for other playlists, etc. if what you want is to avoid having the Christmas music come up in Party Shuffle or other randomized playback. To do this, just select all of the Christmas music and assign it the genre of "Christmas." Then create a new Smart Playlist as follows:

Name it something like "All except Christmas" and then use it as the basis of whatever it is you want to do (Party Shuffle, etc.).
Elliot asks:
What is the best way to turn ripped cd as an 'Audiobook' in iTunes? I have seen one or two tutorials that require the mp3s to be converted into AAC and then to rename every .m4a to a .m4b and re-add folder to library, but this seems a little long winded. I know it could be automated but I was wondering if there are any other slicker solutions already available?
I haven't used it myself but I believe Audiobook Maker does pretty much what you want. It will basically automate the process you've described. It's open-source and a free download.
Johnny asks:
While I'm on the road with my MacBook, I want to access files that are on my Mac Mini at home. How do I do this? I've done searches online for "Mac OS file sharing," but nothing I've tried has worked. The way I envision it, I would use the Finder menubar, select Go -> Connect to Server... and then enter the IP address of my MacMini. By the way, I have a NetGear WGR614 v4, and I imagine that whatever you suggest involves some sort of port-forwarding. I think I've managed to get Personal Web Sharing enabled, but all I see is an Apache web server thing.
Far and away the the easiest thing to do (if you're running 10.5 on both machines) would be to use one of Leopard's new features: Back to my Mac, which will automate this if you've got a .Mac account, or iChat screen sharing if you don't. Of course, the latter option would require you to have iChat running on the mini all the time, and in either case you could never allow it to go to sleep. Here's a nice tutorial that explains what you need to do. Perhaps the best way to actually transfer the files is just to use iChat itself.
Turning on File Sharing is a prerequisite for Back to my Mac, but it may be quite slow because the AFP protocol was apparently designed more for local networks. You can turn on File Sharing in the Sharing Preference Pane. Since you'll need to track your dynamic IP if Back to my Mac isn't doing it for you, you'll also probably need to use a dynamic update service like DynDNS. You'll also need to open port 548 on your router. Frankly, you're probably better off with either Back to my Mac or the iChat method.

I've been having the same problem as Shawn on my MBP15 recently. Anyone else? Any solutions out there yet?

I just got a 15" 2.2GHz and had a very similar wake-from-sleep issue. After waking, AirPort wouldn't work - even though i had been connected to a wireless network before going to Sleep. Then something would increasingly tie up the processor (cursor skipping around) until the Gray Screen Of Death. Sometimes from a cold boot, the AirPort card wasn't even installed.
The Genius at the Apple Store prescribed resetting the PRAM, running the hardware diagnostics from the installation disc, and then erasing and reinstalling the OS. No software updates made a difference; seemed to be a bad AirPort card.
It was a refurbished unit so Apple had to sent out a replacement, otherwise i could have swapped for one at an Apple store. New one seems to be ok.
On another topic, how picky should i be about the LCD quality on my LED MBP? There's slight dark areas on the sides and bottom corners. Do any come out "perfect?" Or do they pretty much all have that?

You're not alone.

Johnny - you may just want to use ssh and sftp if you are familiar with the command line (even if you aren't, there are GUI interfaces - see cyberduck: http://cyberduck.ch/)
they are fast, secure, and robust. You will, however, need to set up port forwarding.

I have a Macbook Pro (2GHz Core Duo) running OSX 10.5.1 and sometimes my screen goes completely gray and I get this message: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." I have noticed that it usually (not always) happens when I am using either Transmission or Azureus. What do I do?

The kernel panic you're seeing is a known bug in the Atheros Wi-Fi Chipset driver. See the Apple Discussions here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1194095
I've had the OS crash playing iTunes Internet Radio as well. The solution is to use an ethernet connection if you want to use something like a torrent program or streaming audio.
Apple knows this has been broken since Leopard was released, but no fix yet. Bad Apple! Bad!
mmendoza27 said 12:58AM on 1-10-2008
That would be known as a Kernel Panic, which is like a Windows BSOD, you can read more about it here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
You may want to try and download the newest version of Azureus or Transmission, they're kinda common with new updates (I mean like 10.4.0, 10.4.1, 10.5.0)

to Jon B -
Don't use another profile. Use the Nightly Tester Tools extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1391
It overrides the plugin version settings and allows you to use any plugin with any version of firefox (of course, they aren't guaranteed to work fully, though)

To Johnny's question: if AFP is indeed not working well, you can try to use (s)FTP which both are included in every OS X release. Both are to be activated in the Sharing preference pane (sFTP runs with when you activate "Remote Login"). Afterwards you want to use DynDNS and forward the correct port on your router.

I have a HP C4180 printer that doesn't seem to print right under the default settings. For example: black print shows up pink when printing a pdf and not all colors show up when printing from Comic Life. I can eventually get it to work after tweaking some settings (ie colorsync), but shouldn't simple things like black text print fine under the default setting? My print cartridges have a high ink level and I have the latest drivers installed for Leopard. What gives?

Hey Jeff, those are dumb ideas for dealing with Christmas music. If you just highlight and "un-check" all the holiday tunes then iTunes won't play it. What I do is select all of the holiday genre and delete it. Then I make sure I select to "keep the files" rather than "move to trash". Then I go to the iTunes folder and zip the Christmas tunes for next year.

For running firebug, you can also stay on FF 3 and use Firebug 1.1, find it here: http://fireclipse.xucia.com/

I could never figure out the Audiobooks item in the iTunes sidebar. It shows 12 items in my library which seem to have nothing in common with audiobooks or with themselves, for that matter.
How do i define - or undefine - files as audiobooks so this sidebar item will become relevant???

Is anyone else in my situation: I have a 15" 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro. I keep my music library on a 160 GB FAT32-formatted MAXTOR USB drive. Frequently, while the drive is mounted, Finder will become unresponsive. The only cure (that I know of) is unplugging the drive (I can not unmount it without Finder). This has caused much pain when the drive freezes in the middle of an important operation. I've lost two iTunes libraries so far! MAXTOR Customer Service is useless. Maybe the TUAW readership can save me!

If Finder is unresponsive when dealing with an external drive it is better to let it be, and it usually works its crap out. If you must unmount you should use Spotlight (or Quicksilver) to launch Disk Utility and eject it from there. In the worst situations you can also force quit finder, usually with negligible effects and eject after it relaunches.
If you can use a HFS formatted drive, you would likely not experience this issue. (I have similar problems with my FAT32 backup drive for my Mame cabinet, but not with any of my HFS+ drives)

Thanks Aaron. I've tried to quit (or relaunch) Finder through the Activity Monitor, but it continues to hang. And it hangs for a long time - the last time I let it sit, I waited for more than an hour with no response. I'll try unmounting through Disk Utility next. Fortunately, it's rarely very problematic, just annoying.
I'm planning on getting Leopard and a big external drive for Time Machine, then reformatting my portable drive to HFS. (I'm just sad that I won't be able to plug my drive into my XBox anymore. I'll just have to get Connect360, I guess)

When putting a MacBook / Pro to sleep it is important that you close the lid cleanly and firmly. Do not let it bounce.
You must wait untill the sleep light is pulsing before moving the machine or the sleep process could be interrupted and it is possible that it will not go to sleep which can result in the machine getting very hot if you place it in a case or bag.
Also by moving the machine or re-opening the lid you can have problems waking from sleep.
It must have the opportunity to save the information needed to wake from sleep with all your windows where you left them. The more stuff on the desktop, the longer it will take to sleep.
ALWAYS wait for the sleep light to pulse before doing anything else with the machine.

I had similar issues as Shawn with my MBP. I found this tip in a apple support forum, and so far it's worked for me. In Energy Saver preferences, uncheck "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep". I know it seems weird, but it's working for me.
Also- I had some buggy mouse issues. If you have microsoft intellimouse software installed, make sure to get the latest version, 6.22. It fixed the wacky mouse issues after sleep for me (at least so far. I just installed it today)

maybe I have an answer to the MBP mouse issues. I had the same on my new MBP when I had just installed Leopard. On the Apple discussion board I got the suggestion to stop using the iStat widget, and since I haven't got any wake from sleep mouse issues. Do any of the guys with the mouse issues use iStat?
