Use Pingie to get Macworld alerts from TUAW on your mobile
Next week is going to be a busy one for the Mac blogosphere and TUAW is no exception. Sure, you can watch our Twitter feed for goings-on (we'll be reporting our location regularly), or subscribe to our Macworld 2008 tag feed, but what about keeping tabs while you jog? Enter Pingie. As Nik explains over on Download Squad, Pingie takes RSS feeds and sends SMS messages whenever something new pops up.You can put in pretty much any feed you like, but Dan over at UNEASYsilence was nice enough to create a hot little landing page for TUAW's Macworld feed. Just put your email and phone number in, and you're ready to get updates as we publish them. Please be aware that you're gonna want the unlimited text messaging from whatever carrier you're with-- we don't want iJustine-style bills going to anyone.
To unsubscribe from the Pinged feed you can text "Ping Stop" to 95495. Let the pinging begin!

You could also try Fastbreak Feeds at http://feeds.fastbreakmobile.com/AddFeed?feed_url=http%3A//www.tuaw.com/tag/macworld08/rss.xml
In addition to what Pingie does, Fastbreak will let you set a time range for the alerts, send more of the story, and let you define keywords to look for in stories...

Twitter can already be followed via SMS messages, so why add another service into the mix?

Hi Wyld --
Yes, you can follow Twitter by SMS, but not everyone's on Twitter (why, we don't know :-). Also, TUAW controls the Twitter postings -- you control which RSS tag feeds you follow.

its saying your feed is invalid, could this be a problem with me living in canada?
Reality3 said 9:28PM on 1-09-2008
I noticed it said the feed is invalid once, but then I tried again and it added it perfectly. My friend also added it from pingie.com/tuaw and it worked fine for him without that error message.

It says it wont work for Canada. Any of the carriers they list that might work with Rogers?

What good does a headline do me. I'd rather get the whole article. The FastBreak app is definitely cooler....I can't even get to the rest of the rest of the article if I do find the headline cool.....Weak!!!

Maxx, you realize there are limits to what SMS can do, right? Fastbreak will give you more control, but we felt the lightweight nature of Pingie was actually a bonus for many of our readers.

I understand the limits to SMS, I just think that it's a win for everyone if you get more information. A headline and athe first 2-3 sentences is more compelling to a reader than just a headline, wouldn't you agree? I also think that if you can't go to the site and get more of the article from the message, it defeats the purpose of getting the info as an alert. If I'm going to have to go to my computer to read more, I could have just done that in the first place. Not being able to filter what I get or how often is annoying. I used Pingie on another feed, and it was dumping like 30 messages a day at me.....what good does that do me? I ended up shutting it off....I think the Pingie service has a long way to go, and as someone who understands mobile and what is available from a fuctionality standpoint, I wxpect more from a service like this.
