Wired offers up Macworld predictions

One of my favorite things about Macworld is the fact that everyone suddenly feels the need to share their predictions about what Apple will be introducing this time (we at TUAW are not immune to this, and have already shared our predictions. How wrong will I turn out to be? Only time will tell). Wired has listed a few software developments they are thinking will happen at Macworld:
  • Leopard 10.5.2 will be released with new features
  • iPhone 1.1.3 firmware released
  • No updates to iLife/iWork
  • New iTunes with movie rentals
The article goes on to talk about Office 2008 (available Jan. 15th), MacHeist, and Core Animation. Check it out, if only to stoke the Macworld fire that is burning in your heart.

My guess is that "There Something in the Air" is not merely referring to new product introductions that are wireless, but also an introduction of Apple's new environmental platform.

Just last May, Jobs published his letter about "A Greener Apple" where he promised to make progress on this front.

Lamest. List. Ever.

- Leopard 10.5.2 will be released with new features
Most likely wrong. Other than minor things like fixing Dock folders, there probably won't be much going on.

- iPhone 1.1.3 firmware released
Woo hoo. A) Easy predicion B) What's the big deal? MAYBE a new feature (like the way an earlier one opened up the iTunes store) but likely not much more, unless they want to enable iChat, MMS, video recording, voice recording, etc.

- No updates to iLife/iWork
Gee, ya think? After releasing iLife 05 in Jan '05 and 06 in Jan 06, Apple released iLife (and iWork) ***08*** in mid-2007. And now Wired is saying there won't be an update now that it's Jan 2008? I'm speechless. And

- New iTunes with movie rentals
Possible, but no credit to them for the "prediction"--it's been in the works for years.

It's like they built the list by googling for "MWSF 2008 predictions" and then copying the first few items from the results page.

For something is in the air: How about new ipods with support for bluetooth headphones? That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the banners.

I'd be happy with minor upgrades to the MacBook line, since that's what I'm buying rather soon.

But something bigger would be nice.

"Leopard 10.5.2 will be released with new features"

1. You don't add major features in point releases.
2. Leopard only came out a few months ago, it's far too early for any new OS X features to be announced
3. Preview builds of 10.5.2 were seeded to developers in December, and if there's anything exciting and new in them, it's been kept surprisingly quiet
4. A bug-fix release of OS X is slow news day stuff. It certainly isn't a Macworld-level announcement
5. You REALLY don't add major features in point releases.

Any OS X updates announced at MacWorld will be tied directly to whatever hardware they're releasing: i.e. if the as-yet mythical portable has a multi-touch interface, the OS will be updated to support it only on that sub-notebook.

i think you're right. if there is a ultra slim macbook without a optical drive and a hard drive, i think the appleish solution is a media server type device with a built in airport 802.11n..

a wireless huge hard drive, fast internet, and maybe even a blue ray drive all in one.

it would also make alot of sense for apple tv and all this talk about rental movies.. it would make sharing media around the house alot easier
