iPod Touch gets five new apps
Though there was plenty of other news at the Keynote today, iPod Touch users got a little love thrown their way today -- for a price. Master Steve announced that effective immediately, there are five new apps available for the Touch: Mail, Stocks, Notes, Weather, and Maps. Oh, and it will set current Touch owners back $20.
- Preview mail before you open it, display grapics and photos inline, and view HTML, PDF, Word, and Exel attachments.
- Stocks, Weather, and Notes all appear as widgets on your home screen.
- Google Maps determines your approximate location if Wi-Fi is on and gives you directions, marks specific locations (Starbucks?), and has both hybrid and satellite maps to show you the way.

so, are they using some kind of crappy legal logic again, or are they not bothering?
this is what i'm talking about: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/15/apple-holds-802-11n-capabilities-hostage/
by the way... was it ever determined if that logic was legit, as in mandatory for apple? or was it just creative prevention?
does the same apply here? did it ever? it doesn't seem like it can considering the circumstances. it just seems like gouging.

the itunes rental firmware upgrade is free so you can spend money
mail and others apps that won't give them money is not free, even it's already developed... and free for new users.
that's not the way to treat early adopters

Am I reading the page right? That these apps will be preinstalled on new iPod Touches? So it's yet another case where early adopters are paying the penalty?
I understand new software comes along. I don't understand charging $20 for something that's free.

Actually, no they shouldn't have. It's a damn iPod. Get over it. iPods have always been about music. Look at the classic or nano or shuffle. No fm radio? Boo Hoo? No expandable memory? Boo hoo... I'm surprised they put what they put that much on it to begin with. Really, get over it or go buy a Zune that will give you internet and youTube? or a SanDisk that will give you internet and youTube. Be happy with what you have, and if you don't want mail on your iPod Touch. Wait until you get home or check it on your phone. May the whining cease!

i'm not impressed with this at all. i will leave mine hacked and will not upgrade to 1.1.3 until the new hack comes out.
i just don't understand why Apple insists on punishing early adopters. first the iphone, now the ipod touch. it's just ridiculous.

$20 (about a ten-spot in my currency or between four and five cups of premium coffee) and I have native mail on my iPod touch. Well, if I had an iPod Touch, I'd be pretty happy. It just doesn't seem a lot of money for that functionality. Just my ha'penny's worth.

Well £12.99 actually Danny , but still good value IMHO.
cozart said 3:10PM on 1-15-2008
it's not really about the money, though. it's about Apple's attitude. early adopters are having to pay for something that new adopters and iphone users are getting for free. it's completely ridiculous.
it's a penalty for early adopting, something that should be praised rather than punished.

$20 doesn't bother me, and I've only had my Touch for a couple of weeks. I downloaded the update already, tried the Maps app. and it worked like a charm, triangulating my location down to a block.
Remember, folks, they're adding this set of features to a device that didn't initially support them. That's not a ripoff, and if you think it is, sell your Touch and get an iPhone.

If you map out directions and then go offline, do the directions persist? In other words, is the Maps app on accessible while online?
fritzbrown said 12:26AM on 1-16-2008
BUT, The touch was supposed to have these features when released, at least that is how Apple originally advertised them. Until the ads were pulled and the touch was purposely, in many users opinions, crippled.
The touch is everything I wanted it to be thanks to the jailbreak and the wonderful 3rd party developers. I have no need to upgrade and no desire to pay Apple $20 for apps it should (or was supposed to) have had all along.
Lisa Hoover said 3:13PM on 1-15-2008
Yeah, the new Touches will have it pre-installed. I think it's kind of rotten myself, since they waited until after they had a chance to rake in the Christmas cash for them then -- POW (or, um, BOOM?) -- it's $20 more to upgrade.
Of course, I paid it. Sigh.

Just upgraded my non hacked ipod touch: and not regretting it. Yes it is an ipod, but having mail, maps, and adding widgets like an rss reader is a huge addition to the music/video/podcasts. This makes it an iPhone, without phone, bluetooth or speaker. Great if you don't want to pay a monthly fee and don't want to hack your toy.

Has anyone had any trouble upgrading? I purchased the upgrade, and it's showing in my purchase history - I even downloaded a 8.7 KB file after the purchase (some sort of unlock key?).
When I click 'Synch,' however, nothing happens. Has anyone else experienced this?

Does the mail on the touch let you compose or just view emails - don't really want to spend £12.99 when fastmail's webmail client does the job for free!
