iPod Touch gets five new apps

iPod Touch update

Though there was plenty of other news at the Keynote today, iPod Touch users got a little love thrown their way today -- for a price. Master Steve announced that effective immediately, there are five new apps available for the Touch: Mail, Stocks, Notes, Weather, and Maps. Oh, and it will set current Touch owners back $20.
  • Preview mail before you open it, display grapics and photos inline, and view HTML, PDF, Word, and Exel attachments.
  • Stocks, Weather, and Notes all appear as widgets on your home screen.
  • Google Maps determines your approximate location if Wi-Fi is on and gives you directions, marks specific locations (Starbucks?), and has both hybrid and satellite maps to show you the way.
Granted, it's not as exciting as the iPhone update (nor is it, ahem, as free) -- but at least we've got notes and mail now, right? That ought to count for something.

This is outrageous! How can Apple expect loyalty from its customers if it wants to rip us off with a $20 fee to add functionality that should have been there at purchase time. This fee would be more palatable if they had clearly stated on the box that upgrades would be available for a small fee in the future. The way the incremental downloads have been perceived by me have been like the Windows Update facility that fixes problems and provides incremental functionality in Service Packs.

Apple, don't be stupid! The twenty dollars are not worth it. I purchased an iPod Touch for myself after having bought two iPod Minis and two iPod Classics (60GB) last year as gifts. After buying the iPod touch this year before Christmas, I purchased three more as gifts (3 x 16GB and 1 8GB). I will not buy other Apple products if this twenty dollar charge stands. I just think it is offensive. I feel I have been taken and the people that received my gifts will surely fee the same way.

Disgusted,
Robert

The problem is that iPod Touch is being sold in more countries than we are having dedicated iTunes Store for. So you paid the price, download 1.1.3, you cannot downgrade to have it jailbreaked again AND you cannot purchase Software Upgrade - no iTunes Store - no $20 upgrade even if you have your card ready :( that's wrong and unfair.

Well, you can always pay $10 to unlock it. I've had this functionality since the day I bought it months back.

I am... well my new home network. When I use the location finder it's zooming in on my old address - pretty far away from where I am accessing my new wireless network.

Could it be my router?

I purchased the upgrade, tried the pseudo location mapping on Google maps. It's giving me my old address? Any idea why?

Does my router have physical address info?

Does this mean that calendar events can also be added and edited now too? There's ZERO mention of iCal...

I'm torn. $20 sucks since I jsut got my iPod Touch for Christmas. However, the iPhone you are in monthly contracts for airtime and what not, so maybe Apple gets a kickback there. With the touch, there is no ongoing charge, so it's a paid update.

I'm not sure if it's right, but it's better then having to buy a new iPod for the features.

I was going to get it, but then they announced the MBA. Then I bought a MBA.

Ah well, I'm sure someone will buy it.

Hummm, also no mention about fixing Calendar for adding/modifying events. That should also have been included. Funny how a tiny small app. from Jailbreak fixed that. Bummer! Not sure that I'm interested in this yet.

YEESH PEOPLE, calm down, it's TWENTY DOLLARS. Install it or don't!
I for one, with my once jailbroken iPod, decided to go clean long ago. I am totally stoked with my new apps.
I wanted to post that the 1.1.3 and/or the Software Update with Mail also enables VPN. Either I'm TOTALLY blind, or that's never been there until today.
