iTunes now supports movie rentals

iTunes 7.6 is out, and it finally has something we've been hearing about for a long time: movie rentals. As announced at the Macworld Keynote earlier today, Apple has made deals with all of the major studios to provide streaming, downloadable flicks for you to watch on your computer, iPod or iPhone. Library titles are $2.99, and new releases will be available 30 days after DVD release and will cost $3.99. Each movie will be available to download within 30 days, and once you start watching it, you'll have 24 hours to finish.

There is good news for HD viewers-- HD rentals will be available, but they'll cost an extra buck (so $3.99 and $4.99 for library titles and new releases. There'll be 100 HD titles starting today, and more all the time. And of course, movie rentals will be sync-able with the iPhone and iPod, or have the ability to be downloaded straight on to the revamped Apple TV. Unfortunately, we haven't heard an official resolution on the HD (720p is one of the numbers being tossed around, and that's not great for serious HD viewers), but if we get to see one of these flicks, we'll let you know.

Get out the popcorn-- it's time to rent some movies from iTunes!

I can view movies on iTunes, but what a dismal selection, and what a confusing (and barely functional) interface. I sure wish they'd get with the program and stop punishing Mac users who would love to do what PC users can do for no additional cost: view movies from Netflix (which has a wonderful interface that makes it a breeze to find movies you will love.)

I thinks the iTunes movie are a great idea. The only problem is I've tried downloading movies on two different machines and when I go to play them the iTunes program locks up. I've yet been able to get any of the movies to play yet. Has anyone else had this problem?? Is there a solution?

I hate to spoil all the happiness but iTunes 7.6 seems to bring movie rentals alright. However, WITHOUT SOUND! WTF? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1344125&tstart=0

How do I request a refund? Why is no one blogging about this serious error? I'll stick to video stores until they go away. All this technology has made watching a video so difficult. Even DVDs and their ability to skip is so much more of a pain than watching a video cassette!! Urgh.

It sounds interesting, but is it technically possible to download a high definition movie file as quickly as this service implies?

You'll have to have a pretty good broadband connection. I've been able to download an hour-long show from iTunes in about 8 minutes via Verizon FiOS and watch instantly while it downloads in the background, so the "less than 30 seconds" tag probably applies if you have a 5-8Mbps or higher downstream.

There is now a link from the main iTunes store to view all the rentable movies.

None of the rentable movies available so far (for me, Ratatouille, South Park, and Aristocats) are HD, and I get the feeling from the keynote that HD movies will only be available on Apple TV. HD and the buck-extra pricing are only mentioned during his Apple TV spiel. Does this mean no HD movies for playback on a Mac? No starting an HD movie on an Apple TV and moving it to a MacBook or iPod to finish it?

Ok. Good news and bad news:

Here's how to get there:
Go to iTunes Store, Search on "Aristocats". Click "Power Search" in the results screen. Select Checkbox for rentals(leave all other fields blank). Hit search.
(Here's the bad news)
Realize that the 150 movies that just showed up, the only one that's actually rentable is "The Aristocats", and that you have no idea why the others even showed up.

Please return to your regularly scheduled programming. *sigh*

That worked. This is great! It's like a game with no winners!

Jesus, Apple, you messed up huge today.

Actually, if you click on the 'View Movie' button in the results, the page that loads for that movie has a 'Rent Movie' button. What a backwards-ass way to rent. This will be fixed I'm sure.

OK. Slight clarification. Do a search for a movie that can be rented (Aristocats, for example) and THEN the checkbox appears. Yeesh, it's like they're TRYING to hide it.

Nope, still doesn't work for me. I can see Aristocats as a rental, but can't find anything else using your method.

Lame.

So, for people trying to find moves to rent:

Go to the "Power Search", select "Movies" from pop-up, then check the box that says "Search Movies Available for Rental".

Boom. Big long list of movies.

They could make this easier to find....

I don't have that option.

Apple has had pretty much a crap showing today as far as I'm concerned. Very disappointing.
