Pole Position: Remix was seen floating around the iTunes Store in a couple of banners last week after the Jobs keynote, but wasn't put up for download until today. This is a first for iPod games: it's a 3-D racing game. This looks like a really cool game that could keep you company on your morning/afternoon commute (please note: we do not endorse playing iPod racing games while driving). The game features un-lockable tracks, themes, and player cars.
This game is available now on the iTunes Store for $4.99. This game is compatible with iPod nano (3rd generation), iPod Classic, and iPod with video (5th generation).

Wow. Five dollars for a game that came out 25 years ago.

And the funniest thing is the game is listed as "P**e Position", presumably because of the naughty word filters. You'd think Apple would have noticed this.
(At least the listing is this way on the Canadian store -- I don't know about the others.)

I was actually waiting for this game and picked it up this morning. I've been a fan of the classic, and most of Namco's Museum Remixes, so I had a lot riding on this.
In any case, it boils down to the simplistic arcade game engine it's derived from. The emphasis in the arcade was spinning the wheel left or right to negotiate the turns as fast as possible. This is carried over on the iPod's touch wheel, and quite nicely once you get the hang of it. If this is your cup of tea, as it was 20 some years go, then you won't be disappointed with the game's engine -- it's intact.
The Remix aspect is interesting, I like seeing my album artwork as the billboards, and the different unlockables do give it some legs to stand on in the long haul.
If you're expecting to have your mind blown you'll have to look elsewhere. This is really just a face lift with a few bells and whistles added. For the fans, its on par with the Galaga remix which was also pretty good for PSP.

I agree with x999x these games aren't mind-blowing next-gen games. They're iPod games. They are to keep you entertained when you're riding the bus or pinching a loaf.
