Show floor video: Equinux shows the TubeStick

Equinux, makers of iSale, CoverScout and an interesting collection of other apps, was at Macworld demoing TubeStick, their TV receiver. Like El Gato's EyeTV, the TubeStick is a hardware doohickey with the TV parts inside (logically) and some software that lets you watch TV on your Mac. Unlike El Gato, however, there is a social aspect to TubeStick. Example: you can chat with friends who are watching the same thing. The CEO took us on a quick tour, which you can view after the break.

(Note: Equinux also gave us some show swag which we'll be giving away next week)

UPDATE: Switched back to Viddler for the video, but other services are coming soon. Meanwhile, here's the Blip.tv page with the video.

I own both an Equinux Tubestick and an Elgato eyetv hybrid device, and unfortunately, my Tubestick USB device exhibits a far less reliable DVB-T reception compared to the Elgato product.
Even with a nearly-perfect DVB-T reception, my Tubestick device fails to display MPEG2 streams without defacts or artifacts (missing macroblocks, synchronization errors, etc.). I'm not sure whether my very Tubestick device is in trouble (it would cost half the price of the device to send it back to Equinux) or if it's a more general issue with Tubesticks, but from my perspective, Tubestick is hardly usable to watch a TV show.

Nice idea with that social network-thingy. Must be interesting to see what most people watch on TV.

I would be great if it were for the USA. As of now, it's not available here. I was excited, as my BRAND NEW Elgato, is already not working, and going in to be replaced. Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep my eye on this one!

did you not catch jobs take on cable cards? "The removable HDTV tuner format's market situation is said to currently be "loopy" and not truly connected to Apple's, which more closely resembles the DVD rental and sale format."

Did it ever occur to you that he might have had a vested interest in bashing CableCards? His company is competing with cable. He wants your dollars. Of course he's going to have unkind things to say about it. It'd be like expecting Steve Ballmer to say the iPod is great and wonderful.

Yeah, there's a social aspect to my tubesteak, too!

Was no one in their marketing department alive during the 1980s?
