Cocktail Tiger edition goes to 4.0.1, Leopard edition 4.0.2
Just in case you haven't yet upgraded to Leopard, but still love using Cocktail (that crazy mix of Unix functions for OS X), Maintain has released version 4.0.1 of their Tiger edition. They've fixed some compatibility problems with QuickTime, and added support for clearing font caches in Microsoft Office 2008. The update is now available from their website, and is, they say, "strongly recommended" for all Cocktail (Tiger edition) users.Cocktail's Leopard edition is at version 4.0.2-- that update fixed these same problems last week, as well as fixing a network optimization bug for DSL (PPPoE) users.

Onyx seems to do most of the things that Cocktail does. Is there a comparison chart floating around somewhere?

I use both. I bought Cocktail before I knew about Onyx. Actually Onyx has also been updated (now at 1.9.2). Both are pretty similar, but Cocktail, for me anyway, is more stable. One grip I do have about Onyx is that its Help pages sometimes are in French, but not all though. Real cool feature in the new version of Onyx is the ability to change the Menu bar back to white.

@JSW: Seems to me everytime there is mention of Cocktail there is always someone like you comparing it to Onyx. Maybe if you looked at all the revisions Onyx has gone through to get to where it is, compared to Cocktail, and that Cocktail has been updated less, more stable, and ahead of OS releases (hint looming 10.5.2), you would over look that some "very good programmer" should get his $15 over some free utility that may/maynot do the same. If you want to be cheap, recommend Main Menu...which for a free utility, it does what it needs to, no fluff and few revisions. Afterall, aren't most mac utilities like Cocktail and Onyx just front ends to Unix builtins?

@Speddy - Actually, if you read what I wrote, I asked for a comparison. I didn't say "get Onyx, it's free!"
I started using Onyx a long time ago before I was even aware of Cocktail. I actually use very few of the features even of Onyx -- almost all of the default OS X install settings are pretty much fine for me. So I was simply asking whether there was a comparison somewhere so I could see if there was a feature in Cocktail that I would want or need compared to the product I was already using.
But thanks for the lecture on supporting shareware -- much appreciated.

I'd also be interested in seeing a comparison table.
@Speddy: it's arrogant know-it-all types like you who give Mac users a bad name. Read more carefully before you lunge for your keyboard.

I use Tinkertool and the Terminal. Both are free.

It would be so nice if the developers would just merge the versions into a single UNIVERSAL version of Cocktail and just have it do the right thing dependent on what OS it is running under. This is not difficult to implement and it is the main reason I choose not to use this program.
