TUAW Tip: hiding Keynote presentations

If you give many presentations on the Mac, chances are you're using Apple's Keynote presentation software. One cool feature in Keynote is the ability to demo something on your Mac without giving away your next slide or notes. When you're in the middle of a presentation, just hit the "h" key on your keyboard. This will hide the entire Keynote application and show your desktop.

When you press the h key, the Keynote icon in the dock will change and include a play button. When you want to resume your presentation, just click the Keynote icon in the dock.

Until Keynote '08 fixes quicktime export timing with recorded timing like voiced over presentations, Apple is selling a product that does not work as advertised.

Holy crap, I can't believe I didn't know about this tip before now. I've been using Keynote to deliver 5-8 different presentations each week and I always figured you had to quit the presentation, expose the Keynote guts, then minimize to get to another app. I guess I've been schooled.

One question -- I tried this tip just now on a presentation that had animations in it, and when I clicked on the Keynote icon in the dock, the slide came back up but at the very beginning of all the animations. Is there a way to preserve the stage of the build you're on when you hit the "h" key?

To preserve the stage of the build, press the "f" key to "Freeze" before before the "h" key.

First of all, best...keynote...tip...ever, thanks.

Second

>>Yeah.. I have Mouseposé but what Steve does is actually inside the keynote presentation, and it's not controlled by the mouse, instead its just like a box.... ie. introducing the media keys on the new thin aluminium keyboard.

One handy way to do this is described in this post.

There's also a slide that highlights the effect in the presentation linked at the end of the article.

Does anyone know of a feature in Keynote that will allow you to setup a warning system so that you know how many key-presses you have until your next slide appears? I've heard people refer to this as "Breadcrumbs" and I believe I've seen it appear as small dots towards the bottom-right hand corner of the screen while running a presentation. Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about?

Does anyone know how Steve Job does his? I know he usually uses a future release of iWork, but he has always done the dimming thing... where the screen dims and he concentrates on one area. What software do you think he uses?

very cool. I am always annoyed when a presenter crassly shows the inner workings of the presentation.

Nice tip! I love keynote, it finally makes slideshow presentations useful. Presenting powerpoints should be a crime because it is mentally damaging to the viewers :P
