Apple TV software update delayed
Just a quick update on the status of the Apple TV software upgrade: according to Apple's web site, the software is not quite ready and will be available in one to two weeks. As we covered during MWSF, the Apple TV Take 2 (or as I like to call it, Apple TV Redux) will feature support buying music/movies/rentals directly from Apple TV, HD rentals and the ability to view pictures from a Flickr or .Mac account.
The update is free to existing customers and will presumably be shipping standard on all new Apple TV's as soon as it is complete.
Thanks WSN!
Update: Here is Apple's press release detailing that the MacBook Air is now shipping, and that the Apple TV update will be available 'by the end of February.' Thanks to Ominx for the link.

The apple TV update is available now! I just got it
February 12 2008 at 1:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat's the deal with adding Safari to the aTV? That would make this product another must-have like the iPod. I'm guessing there's hack for this?
February 02 2008 at 11:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI guess that could be expected - lots of things needs to fall into place and they also need the library to be of a decent size before going live - anyway - another month is not the end of the world I think
January 31 2008 at 1:20 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMaybe not the end of the world, but I think it is lame to make a big announcement and give a timeline for when the update will be ready, if they aren't sure it will be.
January 31 2008 at 9:28 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAww, Bob Saget! I was really anticipating having my aTV updated before now... Now i need to wait even longer, guess I better chill on telling people who come over all the things the aTV WILL be once i get my darn update, til I actually get it.
Oh well, at least I can lust after the Macbook Air for two weeks...
Slightly off topic, but I too bought an aTV after the announcement. Maybe going one farther than others here, also canceled my cable TV. Now, in anticipation of there actually being content available (Lost airs tonight, download tomorrow?) is there any way to tell before buying a show if it is in 16:9 on 4:3? The old episodes of Lost I have are all 4:3, but some of the newer shows Apple has been offering for free like the Sarah Connor Chronicles, or The Big Bang Theory have been in 16:9. I might hesitate to buy Lost if its in 4:3, and just wait for the DVD (or BD?).
January 30 2008 at 5:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI bought some episodes of Lost that I missed last season, when I first got my ATV, and I can assure you those were widescreen. In my experience, all the new shows that are broadcast in widescreen are widescreen in iTunes.
I didn't go so far as to cancel my cable, but I got my ATV 7 months ago, while in the process of moving. I decided to get high speed internet and not bother with cable. Between the ATV, Netflix, and an HD antenna, the only thing I miss about cable is 24 hour news.
I suspended my DirecTV service 3 weeks ago, and have honestly not missed it. Considering I can watch nearly every one of my favorite shows for FREE on the web, it looks like I will be canceling my DirecTV service. I could no longer justify spending $70 per month to watch a handful of HD channels.
January 30 2008 at 8:25 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUntil Apple and the studios start adding movies to rent, the point is a little mute. Two Tuesdays have come and gone and they have not added a single item to rent. Staying with Netflix till they get there act together.
January 30 2008 at 5:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere are quite a few movies for rent. I rented one a couple of days after the keynote.
January 30 2008 at 5:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI should clarify my statement since the Macworld Keynote Apple has not added any new movies to rent.
January 30 2008 at 6:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt says "over 1,000 titles by the end of February". The software update is still listed as two weeks.
January 30 2008 at 4:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBoo. I was pretty excited for this update.
Question - has anyone figured out the order in which the Apple TV shows your photo albums. It makes no sense. They are not in alphabetical order, they are not in chronological order? I don't understand how Apple could miss something so simple. And, another thing, why can't the Apple TV or iPods support folders that you create in iTunes. I have all my playlists placed nicely into folders on iTunes but on those devices, it's just one big list, nothing is in folders. So, I have to scroll through all my wife's thousands of playlists all with the same crappy music on them to get to my playlist.
I bought mine right after the stevenote. Been checking for the update everyday. I guess I'll chill with that for another few weeks. I'm really psyched for HD movie rentals from my couch, but I am still loving the ATV take one. I held off buying one sooner because in the apple store the quality of the picture looks terrible. Now that I have it at home, TV shows and Movies bought from iTunes look amazingly good on my Pioneer plasma. They should really get some better flat screens in the stores to show off the ATV. Those Sonys are not coming close to giving the picture quality justice. So far I love mine, and it's about to (someday) get even better!!
January 30 2008 at 3:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOh crap, I rented a movie when the feature became available -- only to find out I can't watch it on my ATV...! And I guess the 30 day rental period will be over before they actually come up with the update now...!? :(((
