File List 1.2 does file renaming for free
This is nearly identical to the Automator action "Rename Finder Items." However, for those of you who don't want to sit through creating an Automator workflow, then this might be the application for you! In my opinion, one of the coolest features of this application is being able to create a "droplet." These droplets allow you to simply set up the action you want, create the droplet, then just drag your files and drop them on it to run the action on the files.
This very creative piece of software also won a 3.5/5 from MacWorld's Mac Gems review. This software is available for free (donations accepted) from the Many Tricks website.

Seconded. It's a great little app.

I use FileList1.2 very often. However it has an annoying issue: it doesn't show up as an app when you use cmd-tab to switch between open apps. And it doesn't have a menu. In fact, it doesn't seems an "app" at all.
Still very very useful.

Yeah, that's pretty strange that there is no menu. I wonder why it's built like that...

it isn't an app, just a front for Automator scripts.

I also use renamer4mac. While Filelist is a nicer looking (and better laid-out) program to me, it is PowerPC and not universal binary. To me that means it's ancient, boo!

FYI, as noted in the linked review, a Universal version of File List is in the works.

What about the Script Menu.menu item. I've been using that since OSX was released. Under Finder Scripts is everything you need to batch rename a selection of files you have open in a Finder window. It's there, it's free, it's useful. No need for this "app" since it probably just calls the Applescript on everyone's machine.
I know, people who aren't me can't find the menu. I don't know why Apple hid it after 10.2 but it's still there in System > Library > Core Services > Menu Extras
It's one of the most useful collection of scripts for Apple day-to-day work and it's buried. Why?

Chris, I recommended the Finder scripts in the review Cory linked to. However, the available scripts are fairly limited; File List (and several other similar utilities) offer many more options and are considerably more powerful than the included AppleScripts.

Works great in the toolbar of my finder windows, since it picks up the selection without dropping and closes with cmd-W

FileList is still only a PPC Binary but it seems to work fine on Intel Macs via Rosetta. I wish they updated the program to a Universal Binary.
I prefer Renamer4Mac since it is a universal binary. If you are renaming a lot a files, Renamer4Mac will likely be faster.
