iPhoto Photobooks come to Australia, New Zealand
iPhoto users in Australia and New Zealand can finally purchase iPhoto books, calendars and cards from Apple. You'll need iLife '08 with iPhoto at version 7.1.2. Picture Books start from $39.99, calendars are $26.99 and postcards and greeting cards range from $1.99 to $2.69.Now that you've got access, here are some cool things you can do
- Teach your students a foreign language
- Make a flip book
- Create killer gifts (grandparents especially go nuts for these)
- Demonstrate martial arts forms (Record with a video camera, export to frames with Quicktime Pro, import into iPhoto, make a flip book)

It doesn't seem to work so great for teaching your students a foreign language: "Je parents s'appelle Rick et Anita. Je j'ai trois chat." - need I say more?

wow, I didn't even get that far. I had to stop at: "il les cheveux... mes meilleurs Andrew..." But I guess not even the teacher saw that there was something not right ;-)

You're right, it's littered with errors. Maybe those teachers should focus more on teaching French and less on teaching "how to use a digital camera to take photos" and "produce a book they can read and share with others".
It might be a matter of priorities...

Last week I received my first soft cover book. But I was not that excited when I looked at the pictures. Each page had clearly visual vertical printer lines. Is that normal? I didn't expected those lines to be so present.
My camera is a Sony F828, btw

And about bloody time too.
When I first got a Mac I thought "Fantastic - I'll get a photo book of the kids for the grandparents"
*BZZZ* Wrong. Sorry - not available in Australia. Until now it was easier to do this with a Windows PC than a Mac :-(
You'd think we are some 3rd world country all using OLPC...
Now - off to organise a book..

So, how long did that take? Six years? I guess that shows just how important we Down Under types are to Apple in the scheme of things.

So, wait. I'm in the US, and having never made a book yet, or even used iPhoto, I looked for it in my Applications folder. Oops, when I bought Leopard and clean installed, I forgot to reload the Tiger disc to install iLife - and I only have '06! But according to the US Apple website, it seems I can actually print books and stuff from '06, too.
So what new things are '08 only in regards to printing in iPhoto? New templates or something? Also, can you make your own templates, or does the software basically tell the bureau to print your images on book size x style y?

Well I guess I'll have to wait for the decade to come, until we get the servise in Greece. I've made 2 photobooks so far and that's when I'm visiting my brother in USA!!! Still, it's a nice feature and I'm looking forward for the day it becomes available all over Europe... It shouldn't take so long...

FINALLY.
Now, given the average time Apple has taken to do stuff like this, we can expect the iPhone in 2012. That's no joke, this and the iTunes store took around 5 years to get here. We should get TV shows and movies next decade sometime too.

I work in an Apple dealership and we have been doing iPhoto books for over a year and this is in Perth Western Australia as well (the most isolated city in the world). I also know that we are not alone in offering this service as there are many others the country over. That being said however its not as easy as clicking print through iphoto and it being sent automatically to the printer as you have to provide us with the PDF first....
Still were not that behind the rest of the world! :P

So it actually makes a PDF that gets sent? So maybe you could edit the template before using it to make your own design?

Any way I could create a Photobook with iPhoto here in the states and have it shipped and created in Australia? Just curious since I just returned from a long vacation/wedding there and would love to put something together for my friends in Adelaide...

I have not created a calendar or photobook yet, not because I can't, it is because I can't understand why someone would pay that much money to have one made.
